AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

If it comes back in one piece, let's do it!

Good, because I can't imagine that a Birdhaus 410 made by you is bad.

I just wanted to be sure you knew that none of us made the same assumption you did about the guy selling it because it may not have sounded good...I assumed just the opposite. :)

That's right!

I would have felt better about it if he had paid for the cab before he tried to sell it.
Two words come immediately to mind...weasel deal...and of all the guys to pull that on, you're the last person I can think of who deserves that kind of disrespect Duke.

In all the years I've been dealing with bass players, he's literally the only one who tried to take advantage of me. Just his bad luck that someone who knows me found out about the ad and asked me about the cab. Compared to the people in every other field I've been involved with professionally or as a hard-core hobbyist, nobody else comes close to bass players. You guys are good as gold. I really think there's something about the kind of person who chooses to be a bass player. You guys (and gals!) all too seldom get a turn in the spotlight, but you sure make your bandmates look good.

I'm going to say it one more time then keep my mouth shut about it forever. The birdhouse, four speakers on adjacent sides, in other words two sides that way you can stand up tall and fire out in two directions or lay it flat and have two firing Foward and 2 firing straight up. As long as you have the two Foward firing speakers on the ground you will have enough low-end, if you feel there is not enough low-end. Put a port in the back. make it plugable. the acoustic image upshot is great, but I feel like you need more than one to get the volume. but with the ported design there is certainly more than enough low end. (And look how small the enclosure is. Barely fits the speaker. There is low-end in spades) A 4x8 birdhouse would be the ticket.

Or maybe even a 2x 10 with one in each Direction

Hmmm.

The more I think about this, the more I like it.

THANK YOU!!

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the way that Birdhaus 410 sounds. I'm the lucky TBer who snagged the B48 prototype a couple months ago and can happily state it is excellent sounding that does all it's advertised to (punch, lowend, dispersion, clarity). I also have a B46 which works great for smaller jams and the 6s are really nice with acoustic or fretless.

Not sure how shwashwa's configuration would work - having trouble visualizing it. If I understand correctly, it would have 4 speakers, but on only 2 sides, not 3 as now? Wouldn't that compromise the dispersion concept behind the Birdhaus by only firing up and forward, rather than sideways and forward?

I think the idea is improved flexibility. The cab could be oriented so that one speaker set is always pointed at the audience, and then the other could be pointed in the most useful other direction under the circumstances (except for backwards).

It's a very interesting way of juggling the tradeoffs.

can we call it the swanhaus?

since he didn't like it enough to keep it, I'm going to read between the lines that it's not a screaming success
Bass player buying and selling often has nothing to do with the product.

there's something about the kind of person who chooses to be a bass player
It’s the same something that makes him sell a great playing, great sounding bass because the tort isn’t quite as torty as it should be.

Not to overextend this, but does that mean one speaker would face the floor? How do you cover 270 degrees like the BH does? (That's a very lay use of 270 degrees, folks, so hopefully I won't derail things on that point.)

Or two cabs... one with the second woofer facing East, the other with the second woofer facing West. I'm thinking more in terms of a 2x8 or 2x10 instead of a 4x8.

I see now. For a while there (or maybe it was just a few seconds), I thought you were conceiving of a cab with 2 forward firing speakers and 1 or 2 speakers that somehow rotated from one side to the other (around the back), in a swivel type action. That would be something! But probably not very practical.

Yes but the 2 cab solution you can conceivably buy any two matching Cabs and make it work. I'm thinking about an all in one with the option of having an up firing. I could just buy another thunderchild and aim it in a different direction but that's too much to carry. I can also buy a second upshot or even another ampeg 2x10 to match my existing one. An all in one would be nice. Market toward upright players who play on tiny stages with no room for 2 and who are trying to carry as little as possible but still hear themselves. Like the Phil Jones Combo, except a speaker only version. I can't believe they don't already make one to match their existing amp. People buy that amp so it's a niche that has a market and I would totally get one except I already have several amps that I like, I don't need another one, id love a speaker only version. Seems like the most portable solution will be 2 upshots if no one wants to make this thing

If you used cube shaped cabs with feet on 2 sides (?) & 2 drivers per cube (on adjacent sides), you could have (always one driver of each cab firing forward):
[arrangement 1] stacked cabs: top cab with one driver firing up & bottom cab driver firing across the stage;
[arr 2] stacked cabs with top cab one driver firing to your left, bottom cab one driver firing to your right;
[arr 3] stacked or side by side with the 2nd driver of each cab firing up (not sure about stacking if the bottom cab has a driver firing up, but depending on the feet used, it might disperse the sound from that driver in all directions).
Of course, depending on the venue, there's more options if you go with only one driver firing towards the front.
