Double Bass Audiophile speakers in bass cab

Anybody know what speaker Roland Bass cube 100 equipped with?
It's a very nice coaxial full range 12, would be nice to have it for projects!

The Roland Cube 100 uses "Feed Forward Processing" (FFP). Roland has a white paper the describes it. As I understand it, from some other sources, it has a feedback path from the actual speaker (an LED sensor of some sort) so it can really correct the input to output. You'd have to reproduce this circuitry to get the same benefit of the driver.

On another tangent, On another thread I mentioned I've been playing with a plugin "MaxxBass" by Waves. It can really produce a solid bass sound.

It works very interestingly. Based on what they've been doing with pipe organs for centuries, it adds higher harmonics over the fundamental to allow the ear to better hear the "Missing fundamental". In other words, if your cabinet only does 82hz, and you put in a fundamental rich 41hz signal, it will add higher pitch harmonics that your ear will hear as 41hz. It works.

To be clear it's not a bass boost, it doesn't crank the bass or generate subharmonics. Your amp and speaker work easier because you're not trying to pump up the bass. It in fact includes a high pass filter.

Maxxbass looks to make small + loud + low possible - but at a cost. They have a hardware version for Car audio version MaxxBass 103 that can be custom tuned by changing resonators (crystals).

I'm thinking to pair up with a smaller powered cabinet I have, but I may just stick with the plugin since it has many adjustment parameters and presets.

Motional feedback has appeared in hi-fi speakers occasionally over the decades. I am not sure it does anything that can't be done with EQ. At low frequencies, cone motion can be modeled with a passive circuit, and at high frequencies, a single sensor can't capture the motion of the cone.

Sure it is. But it's not the "distortion" you think about when you hear bass or guitar type distortion. It is harmonic distortion, but controlled.

Double bass waveforms, not being sine waves, lend themselves well to the effect. Bass guitar does too. Just by itself, it will change your "tone", you can dis' it on this, but in the mix it will likely sound the same to the audience.

Another added bonus this method has is dealing with room boom. I'm not always playing in perfectly acoustic rooms. And I don't get to place speakers in an ideal location. Like for example:

So by leveraging missing fundamentals, I can turn down the booming bass frequencies, but listeners will still hear the fundamental without the boom.

Give it a shot. In addition to distortion, if a signal is harmonically complex to begin with, another way to boost harmonics is with EQ. One could boost the mids, or cut the lows. One way to cut the lows is with a speaker that doesn't reproduce the lows, such as typical bass speakers. Maybe what all of this points to is why bass amps sound good despite not having flat response down to the lowest fundamental. :D
 
Getting a Hi-Fi speaker system/enclosure to make accurate sounding bass is a whole other world with a completely different set of goals. One of those goals relates to listener fatigue or the ability to listen to playback at high volumes without it seeming that loud. It's said that the sum of all the distortions within a playback system contributes to this fatigue and one of the largest contributors is the speaker system and its ability to control distortion. This is a goal that both playback and instrumental drivers strive for.

Right now I'm listening to my Son playing distortion electric Guitar through an EVH tubed head feeding a Tone Tubby 4-12" cabinet. This is a lot of volume for our small studio yet it's not irritating because of the remarkable Brown Soun Tone Tubby drivers within the speaker cabinet. These hemp fibered flat cone drivers reduce distortion to an amazingly low level. Switching over to a Marshall 1960B Celestion loaded cabinet the sound becomes harsh, way less defined, and completely irritable. It's a night and day difference.

Tone Tubby is beginning to sell Bass drivers and cabinets unfortunately I haven't had the personal opportunity to use any of their Bass products so I can't comment yet. They have reloaded cabinets for many pro's who must endorse other brands, check out their site and client list.
