Austin Music Scene - Relocating

Austin has a pretty sweet scene, especially compared to it's neighbor, Houston, which has by far one of the worst music scenes in the US.

Can't be much worse than Phoenix !! =)

Um, I hate to sound like I'm inviting myself (I'll probably be working anyway) but Brentwood Tavern has much better food than Waterloo and is just up the road on Burnet (opposite direction). Admirable beer selection, too. I would love to meet some other TBer's here in town, though.

No worries, I'm open to suggestions. I don't know the area all that well; I just knew waterloo was a close beer+burger place.

I think I am being misunderstood here. I am not looking to make a living playing music there as I have a day job that pays the bills, just looking for an original band in the rock genre to play shows and such more as a hobby than a job. Really what I want to know about are the local resources that have musicians wanted ads and such. As mentioned, I found the Chronicle online and discovered some on craigslist just last night. Any others I should be looking at?

MySpace is good. Tons of Austin bands post there.

I prefer playing rock above all else, and, like you, I'm more in it for the fun, than the money. I *have* to have a day job, and can't tour with kids, so...I play whereever I can.

Like others have said, get out and check out the various venues, both downtown and in outlying areas. Get to know people. Check the Chron and MySpace.

Heck, come see us Already In Austin TBers play, and we'll introduce you around! I know lots of players out north. My husband knows *loads* of people...he's played in town for a long time. He knows people in rock, blues, country, and rockabilly.

Between all of us Austin-area TBers and our connections, you should be able to get hooked up.

When, do you think? I'm out of town the weekend of 9/8-10, but am around after that.

This thread makes me homesick... I lived in Austin for 10 years and loved it. I had regular gigs on 6th street and around town - the music scene in St. Louis is OK, but does not compare to Austin.

I played mainly blues/rock along with the other 900 bands that were doing the same thing, but it was fun. Give A-town a big hug for me...

Alright, I am a little baffled! I've found the Chronicle, Craiglist, and MySpace...I've placed ads at all three and gotten absolutely no substantial reponse in nearly three weeks. Where are the 900+ bands playing in and around Austin? I can't imagine in my wildest dreams that none of them need an experienced bassist. Or worse yet, none of them know how to use a computer?

Is Austin all a hoax? There really are no bands there and it's just a ploy to get people to go to 6th St on the weekends? =)

OT but are any of you guys going to the ACL Fest this weekend? I play on Friday at 4:00 at the austin ventures stage. Lots of stuff going on around our slot, so I understand if you don't stop by but I bet none of those other bassist post on talkbass.
