Availability of lateral MOSFETs for repairs

We knew this day would come:

Exicon was the last vendor of these lateral MOSFET parts that we used in all of our MOSFET based bass amps. When Renesas (the new Motorola division) acquired the linear semiconductor business segment from Hitachi, it became apparent to us that the lateral process that's the basis for the MOSFETs used in our amps would be subject to how much production Renesas would be able to sustain before it became impractical to continue supporting this unique semiconductor fab process.

Exicon bought wafer level inventory from Renesas, converted the wafers to die and packaged them for manufacturer use. About 5 years ago they discontinued all of the TO3 metal can packaged devices now they have discontinued the more popular plastic packaged parts. This was a fantastic part, but quirky, and availability in production quantities has always been a challenge. We went through 3 different vendors of these parts (Exicon is the 4th), each vendor had their issues and in the end it just wasn't worth the hassle and the higher than acceptable failure rates. I used the smaller versions of these parts in some other unrelated products, great devices but as I mentioned... quirky.

While we have a decent quantity of repair parts in stock, we have not been able to acquire all Vgs ranges so if the range is one we don't have stock of, all of the devices need to be replaced to maintain current balance (did I mention quirky?). This makes those repairs quite costly.

Since this applies to all of our own legacy lead sled products as well as many of our competitor's products, I want to be sure that this information is available to you all so that you don't find yourself in a position where you end up with an amp that may be uneconomical to repair, and that you understand why. Also, this particular part family, along with the vertical MOSFET family are absolutely riddled with counterfeit parts that are usually remarked parts of a different type and do NOT work acceptably in these circuits since their curves and Vgs levels are wildly different.

This is why we discontinued the MOSFET amps, we knew this was coming and didn't want to be in this position with our customers when it eventually happened.

There are still some buried in the distribution and manufacturing channels, and some legitimate factory alternate parts, but unless going through the authorized distribution channels there's no way to know what you are really getting because these are not tracable/auditable channels and counterfeits are plentiful.

These were the replacements that were tested and approved for our legacy amps, the alternate parts (one has been out of stock for a while) have NOT been tested or approved and we do not know what differences there might be.

When I did a lot of amp repairs, when I saw EOL on any parts I was buying, I bought ahead as many as I thought I would need, or could afford. Luckily, I am at my own EOL (not literally, that I know of :thumbsup:) and not doing a lot of repairs any longer so I probably have enough for what I need in the future.

I remember working on a Tube Works RT-3300 that I owned, actually I still own it and when I got it, the amp was blown. I eventually found the FETS it used (K135 and J50) made by Hitachi, I believe...it's been about 20 years since I fixed it but when I saw EOL on those FETS, I bought somewhere around 50 complimentary pairs.

I'm glad I did because I have fixed other amps from that time period that also used those same parts. I kept enough to fix my own Tube Works amp again if it ever needs lt. I guess they are still available in very limited quantities but you're going to pay a princely sum for them...and it's a crap shoot whether they will be bonafide Hitachi parts or some chinesium fake parts.

Those K135/J50 parts were the first to be discontinued, though the lateral semiconductor process lived on through several iterations after that but ultimately completely discontinued about 5 years ago.
 
Ok, how do we know which types of amps have this?
All of our legacy MOSFET bass amps, none of the Subway amps.

Other manufacturers have used them too, including some models by EBS (Fafner), TubeWorks, Hartke (3500 MOSFET), HH Electronics, Marshall IBS & 3500 series, Trace Elliot, and others that I have not seen firsthand.

Indeed it does. Carbines, Big Block, V12, M2000, etc.

Most of these amps are between 12 and 20 years old, we have serviced them whenever we could, but the cost of a major repair now exceeds the value of a good working one and we have ended up with some abandoned units that we have a lot of labor into that we have had to eat.
 
I’m thinking that my Walter Woods Electroacoustic Ultra, is now a museum piece. It still works and sound’s wonderful.
I have no idea what Walter used for this specific amp . It was my understanding that the MI-100’s, 400’s and 700’s were all either FET’s or MOSFET’s
Since Walter scraped the part no.s off the critical components there’s virtually no way to tell.

I've only seen the linear amp versions and those were all bipolar output stages, but this doesn't mean that he didn't use MOSFETs in those output stages for models I haven't seen. I've seen both regular bipolar and darlington package bipolar used, quasi-complimentary not fully complimentary.

It's been a long time, and I never saw any of his class D versions.
 
I expect similar problems to valves in the future.

In the moment I have a Mesa Walkabout 350 with melt powertranni and defective powerstage. A very expensive repair, if you want to use original parts (in Europe in addition).

I installed an IcePower 700AS1, the output signal of the ECC83 is connected via an impedance converter, and constructed a powersupply 12,6V DC 300mA and DC 385V 10mA.

It's not finished yet, but preamp and powersupply are working, lack of time to finish it due to Christmas.

May be, this can be a (inofficial, only for me) solution to save the sound of the preamps for the future. There is enough space inside the housing and and the weight drops a lot.

Waiting for the storm of indignation...

You mention “older Walkabouts”. Does this include the last all-black version?
 
A lot of folks think that, once a product is designed, the designer's work is done. In some cases, that might be true. But products in the music business often depend on parts designed for other industries. So, when a part becomes "non-available" (we don't buy enough ourselves for the manufacturer to make it only for us), you often have to redesign things to accommodate a new part. Sometimes it's fairly simple, sometimes not.

Where I worked for my career, we had RF parts that were designed for cell phone usage that were made for cell phone usage, and when one of those parts was no longer needed by that industry, we had to pivot to other parts, as the wireless mic industry is not big enough for anyone to make those parts for you. Likewise, condenser microphones depend on specialized FETs that are used in telephones, those were a problem every few years - you'd have to re-design whole product lines to make sure things could continues. Plastic film?Every condenser, dynamic, and some ribbon mics depend on specialized plastic films, used for making certain types of capacitors. The world's best selling professional microphone, as it uses a square inch or so (cut into a round blank) does not use enough material in a year to interest a supplier into making a run of anything - the stuff is made in 12 foot wide rolls, and when someone else only wants 10 foot wide film, we'd buy the last couple of feet off some rolls for our production. We'd buy stuff chaotically - when supply got low, we'd scour the market, and we'd (hopefully) be offered various lots of stuff. I was once faced with the prospect of buying the "scrap" off the end of some rolls - the dollar amount wasn't THAT big (it would be worth it to keep our products in production), but the quantity was huge - it would take a couple semis to ship it to us, and it would be...400 years of production for us - we'd have to rent space somewhere to house the stuff...for centuries. Luckily, a short while later, we found a lot of material that was only a decade's worth, so we went with that.

The Big Block and the Titan V12 are two of favorites. I'll play them until they fail, then move on. Thanks for the update!
 
I think people outside of manufacturing / repair ( of any industry ) rarely think about the "extinction" of components.
We tend to think the underlying technology , once invented, just remains and is not subject to market pressure like a finished project.

Of course we can still get spring loaded phone dials, 2 inch 16 track audio tape, and Roman concrete, why wouldn't we?
