Avatar 3 way 15/6/tweet part 2

Just received it a couple days ago and have been breaking it in before the wife gets home. First impressions are very positive. Full, clear, and LOUD! First gig will be tomorrow night with the Mesa and a P. I"ve been playing through Acme Low-B2s for quite a while and I'm sure it will take a bit for my ears to get used to the differences. I'll try to A/B the cabs in the garage tomorrow if I get some time, but again, I like what I've heard so far. I also hooked up my MB200 and have to agree with a lot of the previous posts that say you don't need to have massive power for this cab to sound good. That little amp and this cab get a lot louder and fuller than I thought possible. More impressions Sunday after the gig ...

Looking forward to the report.
Thanks, and have a good gig.

Last night at band practice I was enjoying my Walkabout on the 4 Ohm TB153, realizing the pair have ample volume for 95% of my needs, and was asked to turn down a tad, since I WAS too loud. I was all smiles, until the 15"er blew:eek:
My eq was pretty tame: passive Fender 5er with maxed vol/tone, bass controls at noon, mids (250Hz) boosted to 1:30 o'clock, 2.5Mhz boosted to 2 minutes past noon and that's it. Gain was at 2 o'clock and master at 11 o'clock. She was silly loud and cutting perfectly. I emailed Avatar this am about a replacement driver. Bummer, I really wanted to try this at my gig Sat. Now the LDS 15/6 will get the call. Good thing I still have both:p

Lomo, bad deal for sure. I hope we don't get more reports like this.

I had mine thumpin pretty good this past weekend with a Shuttle 9.0, all three gain levels set straight up. However, with the High Pass filtering on the Genz heads, there may have been higher low freq peaks coming from your "300 W" Walkabout than my 900 W Genz. Are you a slapper?

I rarely slap and was not doing any yesterday. I have played this same cab at higher volume before, with other heads. Not sure what happened. In addition, I have the same woofer (but in 8 Ohms) in my LDS, which is over a year old and has been spanked, cranked and yanked and always begs for more, even under an M9. I await an email reply from Avatar-only sent the report this am.

Sometimes stuff fails--things with defects slip past qc, etc.

Exactly. I'm sure they'll replace the driver after I send this one back. Overall it's weird, because I am so happy, since the combination of this cab and my Walkabout was perfect. Tone for days, cut through, with plenty of volume without pushing the head to its' limit, even with my 300 watt WA:p:bassist::p

I've been jamming the hell out of my TB153 and haven't heard anything like complaining. I'm usually hitting it with 1000 watts from my Crown. Perhaps I should be a little more careful...

Lomo, I think I remember your cab being the 4 ohm version. Mines the 8. Could that have something to do with it?

Shouldn't matter. Must've been a dud. Anyway, I already heard back from Avatar. Very reasonable. I send the driver back and they send it to Eminence. If it seems defective (ie not a burnt voice coil) they'll replace gratis, otherwise Avatar will charge me cost for a replacement (about 85 bucks). I don't wanna wait for eminence so I'll have them send me a replacement right away and pay for it; they'll refund me later assuming Eminence does the right thing.

Excuse my ignorance I am not the most hip when it comes to the technical stuff. So this may be a dumb question. I run a Hartke LH1000. The bridge mode does not work, Yet the dual parallel mode works like a charm. I am waiting patiently for The avatar 15/6 4ohm. In the meantime I run a Warwick 210 8ohm and a gk 410 8ohm. My head is rated at 640W in DPM at 4ohm. Can I plug two cables into the same cab from the head to push the full 640W or would something go terribly wrong?

No. You can't and yes, something would go terribly wrong. Namely you'd kill your head.

Why doesn't your LH1000 work correctly and perform in Bridge mode?

^ I have no doubt that smarter folks than me will chime in (Probably before I'm done typing), but I think the something going horribly wrong option is correct. Unless the cab is specifically wired for bi-amping mode it seems like you'd be feeding power back into the power amp which doesn't seem good.

Anyway, has anyone else run into the huge mid-range growl I'm finding in this cab? Coming out of a 410 I'm sort of surprised to find myself dialing the mids back a lot. To be fair, it's mainly the Lightwave which has a much hotter output than the Conklin and may be driving the Demeter tube a lot harder, but it seems like that little 6 inch mid is just roaring. Perhaps I'm not used to hearing mids articulated as specifically as this cab does?

Almost every production cab has a hole in the mids where this cab doesn't. We hear it as mid-forward, but that's what flat really sounds like.:)

Thanks Burning, I thought my hearing had gotten even worse. I thought it might be what I always should have been hearing but hadn't. It's been a lot like upgrading the stereo system to very high quality stuff and hearing great recordings for the first time (not that my playing is so great).

I'm really getting stoked for a fEarful build to add to (or maybe replace) the Avatar. I love hi-fi!

What makes you say the bridge mode doesn't work? Bridge mode is the only way to use a single cab w/ the LH1000 (other than rewiring a cab with an even number of full range drivers--of which the 153 isn't--to have two inputs each connected to half of the speakers).

The LH1000 shouldn't be run on only one of the two power amps, and as has been said, you can't run DP into a single 153.

You really need to get the bridge mode working.

Or they have a bump in the low mids that this one doesn't...

For my preferences, I have been boosting the low mids a bit or cutting the high mids a bit. However, if you can get back away from the cab, I think you'll find that it is difference in the players perspective that you are hearing. If you were on your knees in front of the 410, you may hear a lot of that growly content there too.

Not sure why exactly. I bought it used from a local music shop. The guy at the store said the bridge doesn't work, said he looked at it and couldn't figure out why exactly. So I have always just ran a two cab system in dual parallel mode. So I guess that means I am gonna need 2 of these 15/6's haha unless I wanna buy a new head to power just one cab properly.
