By the time a comprehensive comparison full of charts, polars and such is available, there's likely to be other action on this front anyway. The Avatars look like a great XMas gift at the introductory price. I'd buy one myself, if it were a few years ago, even at the larger price.

I think a lot of folks on TB look to the other people "in the know" about things like a new cab design coming out. Most everything I've read on this new cab is: "It's in a standard size box but it might be OK", And "what about comb filtering" because the tweeter and Mid range are "to far apart", "Wow, it's made with 3/4 inch plywood?" " but for the money it might be an OK cab".... JimmyM says he'll go with whatever "Bill" and "Greenboy" says. Well, there is a lot of truth to all of that, there are in fact a lot of people on TB who know a hell of a lot more about speaker throw, SPL's, etc.. than I do, and when these people chime in and right off the bat say "nice try but no cigar" it makes me think twice about laying out the coin no matter what the cost when I know that there is folks like Tom Bowlus that are in the business so to speak to check these kinds of new amps and cabs out and then let the masses know. I'm too afraid to buy one when all the folks in the know have said: "it might be a pretty good cab but it wasn't built with much thought" Which may be true. How the hell do I know? Look, I know who the folks are here on TB that know what their talking about. You guys know who you are. You know more about this stuff than I ever will, no question. So, no matter how long the wait I guess I'll wait to hear what Tom Bowlus has to say as well as the rest of the regular bass cab buying folks. I feel bad that I'm going to put it on the shoulders of people that may or may not have as much money as I do. But for me it just has to be this way for now. And if I felt like I had even "good" wood working skills and the tools I'd go the DIY route. But, I'm just a bass player.

Even despite some "meh" comments, I think this is the bottom line that even the experts are trying to say:
For the price, you're not going to find a better cab. For something better, you'll end up spending at least $100-700 more (ranging from DIY to LDS to barefaced) -- and you'll still either have to make the cab yourself, OR wait 3-6 months from the day you pay until you get your cab.

Sounds like what Avatar has always done. 80% of the product at a great price, and great/fast service.

(And if you turn your tweeter down, you won't have comb filtering in the lower treble area... which honestly most bass players wouldn't care much about anyways...)

I think what most of us are saying is that for the price it's a good deal. There are many issues, but even at $500 none that I'd call a deal breaker. You can do better, but it will cost you.

Might there be some improvements a customer could make to rectify said issues? IIRC, it was the mods to the Carvin LS1503 3-way PA cab that helped fuel the current craze (Yes, I know GB and the rest had the seeds of ideas well before the Carvin caught on as a potential semi-DIY supercab).

And might Dave at Avatar make some revisions to push those who are on the fence over the proverbial edge?

I don't imagine it would be expensive to revise the spacing of the horn and mid on later iterations of this cab. At that point, you'll have a cab that is not as refined as a true fEarful, but will meet most of the design goals of the fEarful to a certain degree. Of course, I am not familiar with the economics of running a speaker cabinet company, and don't have a real idea as to the economics of this change. Doesn't seem expensive from the outside looking in, I suppose.

Of course thinner wood could be used, but that won't alter the sound of the cab that much. The cab's got the volume necessary for the 3015lf. And certainly a better quality horn and mid could be used, but the elasticity of demand vs. price might make this ill-advised. I think the proprietor is using components that he believes will allow his business to operate at a profit he's comfortable with. No fault in that. I don't think it's hugely profitable, but it's enough to keep the door open and people paid.

Yes, someone would obviously need to design the crossover. I'm sure someone will try this eventually. I'm really interested to hear how this cab works out. It certainly has some bang for the buck potential, which seems to be Avatar's niche.

avatar's niche is definitely bang for buck potential. they make no bones about it. you won't get the cab you always dreamed of, but you'll get a better cab than most in that range. i'm glad someone's making one of these type cabs for not much money. no reason the struggling young musicians shouldn't have good dispersion, too.
