Heard back from Dave about the grill vs cloth.

"HI Kevin...thanks...for now, we only want to use the black metal grill because the cab moves so much air, we would be concerned about a fabric grill moving too much and making noise. Thanks!"

I had 4 or 5 cabs and 5 basses go up in high temp smoke when my mountain home was reduced to ash by a forest fire, and I did not have time to wait for deals like I do now. I called Avatar and ordered a neo 2x12 retail paying way more than this 399.00 deal. Very nice cab. I would jump on this and mod if necessary were I not expecting an LDS cab soon.
I bet Dave would not let it out if it sounded like a__

I plan to order one and will post reviews + video clips. I need a 15" cab...the 6" and the tweet (which I will turn off or use only slightly) are a bonus, and for the price...I just can't resist. I literally read every post on all 11 pages and want to thank everyone for all the valuable input provided! Cheers!

I think if one were to turn off the horn it would nullify any comb filtering issues presented by the less than ideal spacing of the horn/mid driver. As such, I can see this cab being a gateway for players to explore well designed, three-way bass cabs. Anyone who really likes what they hear may be inclined to mod it for better performance or step into the world of DIY. Those who aren't handy may opt to have LDS build a custom three-way or even try one of the higher-priced options like the Thunderchild or Barefaced cabs.

It's a great time to be a bassist.

Gotta laugh on this one. Like a lot of people here (or on an audio site anyway) couldn't have arrived at the same or better results given either Eminence Designer, WinISD, or any other box sim software. If Eminence busted their tail here (and I'm sure they did NOT), it kind of begs the question: who are they hiring these days? ; }

One should realize the box is probably the same size, the baffle is the same size, the port has the same cross-section as all the larger Avatar boxes (a stock 3015LF could actually use another .5" in height, or at least .25" just to keep the upper and lower bits of the port from being so close to each other). Maybe the shelf depth has changed, maybe it has not.

That's what I meant about not buying too much into [hilarious] ad copy, near the start of the thread. It makes it sound like Santa's best team of super elves has been slaving over this with a test suite from the future. But location of the tweeeter alone shows that this is not so.

That said, this is still a good deal. There's a killer woofer in there, and who else has done that in the price range? And as a few have figured out, it's probably not too hard to mod this puppy a little ways further to fix the tweeter placement.

By the time a comprehensive comparison full of charts, polars and such is available, there's likely to be other action on this front anyway. The Avatars look like a great XMas gift at the introductory price. I'd buy one myself, if it were a few years ago, even at the larger price.

Further thoughts. Way back when I got the Boutique On A Budget threads going I had casually emailed a few of the Carvin people I'd had contact with during previous purchases, about going this route for a cab. But Carvin's corporate culture is really hard to get any real thoughts or discussions through to anyone who could actually care to do something. Not even a rote reply back.

And later, another gentleman on TalkBass evidently was trying to make something substantial like that happen with Carvin too. But at that point I figured Carvin didn't deserve any efforts on their behalf to have a cool profitable product, if they still had so many communication obstacles with 'tude in the way.

So you have to hand it to Dave: he was going to do something entirely different. But just a little bit of time with TalkBassers and he aimed to please. Gotta love a company that isn't putting up barriers.

I agrees. I like the fact that he really turned on a dime. He posted one design, got some fire from TB on it then pulled it and re-imagined the product. Makes me think that his heart is really in the right place in reference to both the market (good price, good quality build) and taking a certain leap of faith along with digesting what everyone here has been saying. Selling these at 400 bucks has got to be cutting his margin to the quick to get these in the hands of players.

I really wish I could bring myself to buy one at that price. I did ask him to sell me one without a 3015LF in it since I have two spare 3015LFs sitting around, but he can't for some reason. Just got too many darned bass cabs and not enough space.

* note if anyone winds up buying one for a 4 ohm 3015LF and wants to resell it without the woofer, lemme know. I realize I'd need to wire up a new crossover but that's not a huge deal.

Not to get too far off topic, but I bet that's one of the main reasons Carvin's Sacramento store is closing. I love my Carvin amp and I wouldn't mind a nice custom bass from them, but I swear I've never dealt with worse customer service in any industry. And yes, I did actually call them on the phone lol!

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that Dave and Avatar have not only listened to us here on TB but have actually done something as a result has earned my business. If some other deals that are in the works fall through, I will definitely buy one of the new Avatar cabs based solely on what I've read on TB (I've never heard an Avatar in person). It's gotta sound better than the Carvin BR515N combo I've got now!

Agreed. Even though the cab may not be perfect, Dave generally has the right idea. And he's going to sell a lot of these because of it, probably a lot more than if he released that original full-range 15/10 cab.
