Avatar Owners Club Pt. 2

I just scooped up a shuttle 9.0 and I'm looking at the Avatar 210 neo and the 112 cab.....eventually I want to have both so I'm thinking of ordering either the 210 neo first at 8 ohms or getting the 112 with the ceramic mag 500W at 8 ohms.

that would mean when I have both that I'd be running a combined 1000 wats and the 9.0 puts out 900. If I went with the neo 12 it would only be a combined 750W.

Thoughts/Opinions?

How much power do you need?? If you have an efficient amp with good tone why push 900W? I do not want to stand in front of a 900W bass amp! Now a days almost any gig will allow for PA support, stage monitoring is all you really need to provide. I use an SWR Studio220 with an Avatar sb112 (4ohm) at most of my gigs and have lots of headroom, even outside. Without PA support my SWR Super Redhead @350W into 210 and 115 is much more than needed. But these are efficient amps. Also if your amp really puts out 900W it is going to peak at possibly 1300 to 1400W and you want some speaker protection, especially at low frequency. I usally run speakers that can handel 2X the max power the amp can provide. I like the amp to fart before the speaker farts. That way you get full potential out of your gear. Sorry, I just can't see running a 900W rig unless your playing a huge auditorium with no PA support, and then you need a new manager.

Thanks, man....I had Dave make the 2X12 in Orange Tolex to match the head. I have to say it was a breeze dealing with Dave and Avatar. I'll be a repeat customer (looking towards an Orange tolex 1X12 for a top piece for this rig).

Got my matching 212 in yesterday. Man what a great combo the 210 and 212 make! Seriously loving on this stack.

Yeah, using a GK 700RB-II right now. I don't think you could use the bi-amping feature with these cabs unless you did some wiring modification. So for now I'm just plugging straight in with 1/4" jacks.

And yeah, it is killer looking :D So glad I went with the 212 over a matching 210. Just gives the stack a lot more authority. Doesn't look so skinny it'd tip, etc.

Exactly the stack I currently run, with a Shuttle 6.0 head. And fdask is right, definitely looks sharp. Just wait til you get that 2x12 broken in... it gets better after 10-20 hours of playing time! It thunders and the combination of both cabs is SWEET!!!

easy mod and works great, i did mine

remove the xover or get a new jack plate and a 4 wire speakon conn.( that way you can switch back for resale) simply wire the drivers to the +1,-1 and the horn to the +2,-2 of the new connector. you then have to use the gk 4 wire speaker cable or make you own. when you drive the gk amp it can get some nasty sounds from the horn running full range,this eliminates that. also able to turn horn completely down or off, if you do that on the back of the cab you'll burn up the crossover. also nice with both cabs instead of reaching behind the cabs to adjust two tweeters you can dial both from the front of your amp together.

I need a cab, and for the venues (the garage) I play a SB112 will be the ticket.

My question to owners out there is on Tolex choices.
I was all set for a Tweed with Oxblood/Gold grill, until I read in this thread, many post's ago, that someone didnt want to Laquer after?

Did I read that right, the Tweed, really is Tweed and needs to be laquered to sealed?
Or is it as I suspected just a faux-Tweed finsih in the Tolex itself?
and the laquer biz, was for another purpose entirely

Avatar uses mostly tolex... or ratfur or LineX. Pick one. It's not the tweed like on some fender combos or whatever.

My pair is textured, but probably in the pattern. It's nice. Dunno about tweed though.

yes if you cut all power to the tweeter but shutting it off (full counterclockwise) it will over heat the crossover which will cause it to fail. it has nothing to do with your eq, what you are doing is fine. you can keep it slightly on and its ok but don,t run it full off
