AVRI 63 vs 62 P Bass

Small Hands:''62
Medium/Big Hands: '63

AVRI Jazz Bass too
Small Hands:'62
Med/Big Hands: '64

Professional Cats:All AVRI wether small hands or Big doesn't matter…..but
Radius is a different Story musicians based on genre and playing Chords,Slap, etc.

Nah Bro ,I have the "real all original May '63 Vintage and da neck is Spot on,
nice and thick, like da real thing ,almost Perfect….the real 50's neck is more V like '58 & they are totally different necks ….'62 is thinner necks and less tone (due to the pickups and thick finish) just like the Jazz AVRI 62 ….AVRI '64 got more tone!
Hmmm, well if you have a real 63 neck that is chunky then you do, but I've not heard that before from anyone else and my experience with my 64 Precisions is different.

I have a '62 P AVRI neck that was built in 1982 (first year of the AVRI series), that is the best feeling neck I've played in my 48 years of playing bass guitar. Here is a photo brag:

I find it fascinating that the AVRI 63 has a thick neck, apparently. I've got an original '63 P and the first thing that really struck me about it was how thin (from front to back) the neck is. So comfortable, but almost delicate feeling at first?

fwiw - I'm eager to find a AVRI '63 P. If it feels somewhat similar, I intend to relic it exactly as my original '63 and use it for sketchier shows, etc, without concern.

It won't be similar, the 63 reissues had thick necks. If you're okay with a slab board over a carved radius the 62 reissues feel more like the neck you're used to.

My Vintage May '63 got a Chunky
Neck where my '71 not so chunky ….guess all bass necks were made different regardless of the year….

I didn't find the '63 neck to be overly thick. In fact it was quite comfortable. Maybe a bit more beef than an original '62 I used years ago as I recall but in the same league.

@kranahan just liked this thread… I sold this bass late last year, so i thought maybe an update is in order.

warning: not exactly '62v'63 P content….

I sold this bass sometime earlier this year. And about a month ago, I started looking for another AVRI P bass to buy. Anyway, I trolled the classifieds and eventually found an AVRI '58 a fellow TBer was welling to sell through an off-classifieds conversation.

Here's a photo of my new AVRI bass… It has a very different neck; thicker and slightly narrower. But it does feel very nice in my hands - I've been using a metaphor likening playing the neck to grabbing a nice badonkadonk (with apologies to my sisters).

I can weigh in here, as I've owned/used a 62 for quite a few years and purchased a 63 a few months ago.

Let me first state overall, that this is my opinion regarding everything I'm about to say, so that I don't have to follow every line with a qualifier... Also, these basses both have TI flats on them, and always have. I have no idea of the tones/playability of these basses with rounds on them.

First off, these 2 basses aren't really comparable. Not any more comparable than say a 62 and an AM Standard P-bass. Seriously, different neck, different pickups, different finish... What else is there to make a P-bass "different." The only things I can find that they both have in common (that aren/t common to all AM P-Basses) are:

1. They are both in the AVRI Line
2. They both have Reverse Tuners

That's pretty much where the similarities stop.

But if we must...
The 62.
As others have said, the neck is quite thin (front to back) and is really wide at the nut (1.75"!!). which at first takes some getting use to. IMO, the sound of the 62 is the most unique of all the P-basses, it's broad, airy, and has a dry/crisp(?) quality to it. You immediately know that you are hearing something different. I can totally see why Jamerson preferred to roll-on the bass on his B-15. Overall, I found I couldn't quite coax the tone out of it that I was wanting on the band-stand... That being said, in the studio, plugged in direct, the tone is heaven. Mine is so light that it has neck dive, which is a deal-breaker for me and ultimately relegated it to the studio.

The 63
Is the best Fender bass I've ever heard/played (and I'm not alone in this opinion). It's light, yet perfectly balanced. The tone is the P-bass tone I have in my head, yet sweeter somehow, on both ends. It's buttery and syrupy, but with a "weight" to the tone that is enveloping, and still never dark or cloudy. I use a lot of back-lines, which are sometimes pretty terrible amps (Line-6 the other day, for example) and so far I can't make the bass sound bad. The bass has the kind of tone and playability that make me a better player. We all know what that's like...

I'm not afraid to say it, the 63 is a better bass, overall, for me. Sure, the 62 has the mystique, and I'll even agree that it is the better looking of the 2, finish-wise, but honestly, can you tell a 62 from a 63 on the band-stand visually... (if that matters to you)... You might be able to tell by the amount of mistakes being made across that 1.75" neck!! :help: <grin>

Am I going to sell my 62? Of course not. Is it going to many see gigs, probably not. The 63 is my main gigging bass for the foreseeable future.:bassist:

To the OP. If you couldn't tell from the post above. The 63 is what I would choose. No question.
Change the '62 pups!

Change the '62 pups!
I changed the pups to '63 pure vintage (the one that's in AVRI '63)It's Like Day & Night, immediately sounds amazing! You'll love it!
since '62 came out 20years later in '82 ,R&D wasn't as up to par…..

I have no idea what you mean by this last sentence.

I was answering to this :meaning if he loves the '63 and not sure about the '62 just change the pup to pure vintage'63 because it's newer correct voiced pups, compared the long running '62 (It was designed back in '82 when it first came out and the Fender R&D(Research & Development was not up to par like now (Custom Shop ,new AVRI ll )or 2013 when '63 came out
