Awesome Bassists In Bands You Hate

Last night, a friend of mine was having his cd release show. The band they played right before them was a pretty terrible nu metal band. Their bassist was playing a 6 string MTD through an ashdown mag 300 ( I think) and various preamps / rack effects through an SVT 810. He was insanely fast. I've seen 3 finger technique before, but this dude was plucking with 4 fingers, insanely fast, as well as sweeping and tapping, chording, etc. I couldn't stand what their band was playing, but I just watched in amazement. I also found it amusing that he was wearing a Chinese shirt (with the buttons on both sides and the white strings that attach them) and cammo cargo shorts. haha.

Is there any bassists you love to watch, but can't stand the band they're in / the music they play?

Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne. Sam Rivers would be cracking in a prog metal band, and it infuriated me when one of the Bass magazines was doing a feature on slap bass and they chose to edify Fieldy as the "pioneer of slapping in metal"...Ryan Martinie guys, and probably far more slappers in metal that I'm unintentionally ignorant to.

Jaco in Weather Report. I can't listen to Weather Report. Just sounds like bland elevator music to me. He bass is the only interesting thing about them.

Mark King and Level 42. He's really good and his band are really shite.

Percy Jones with Brand X. Percy is one of my favorites technically but some of those brand x albums are crap.

Looking back, it seems like the whole nu metal phase brought out some REALLY good bassists in horrible bands. Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne (it pains me to even type out intentional misspellings) were good examples, but also Alien Ant Farm and some others that I have blocked from my memory.

Roscoe Beck playing with Eric Johnson also qualifies for me. Phenominal taste, chops and tone, but Johnson's music was just so BORING, even with so much talent.

Let me say that by no means would I ever tell anyone how they should play, what type of music they should play, or what type of music they should like. With that said, maybe the bassists mentioned enjoy playing metal. They are good at what they do, as are the other musicians in the bands. I will say that I'm not a fan of Durst, but I do respect the musicianship of his bandmates. Wes was a monster on the guitar; very creative. I played metal for a long time and caught a lot of flack for it. There were some techs at the shop that I was loyal to, that after hearing me play solo, would ask why I was playing that music with those guys. My response was always, "It's what I enjoy".

I think the playing of Sam Rivers and Ryan Martinie have made it so I can look past the vocalist or lack there of and enjoy the stuff they do.
