No, you are totally right. Trujillo is awesome, and Metallica is ... meh, overrated, boring, etc.
I always thought he was the brains behind the music.
Im honestly not that impressed with just super fast playing.
I have always felt that anybody can play fast if they just sit there and work on scales and technique
but somebody who is really harmonically and melodically sound, to me that takes more just musical intuition and sometimes knowledge.
in short id rather have something that gets stuck in my head as apposed to impressive speed.
The dude from Tool. 
Don't hate me, I just could never get into them as a band, but the bassist is one of the sickest dudes I have ever heard in my life. You have to give respect no matter if you like them or not. I wouldn't say I hate Tool, I just can't get into their music.

Caleb Scofield with Cave-In...I'm so glad he started doing other stuff with Old Man Gloom and his own project, Zozobra. Caleb's bass playing is the only interesting thing in Cave-In, IMHO.
Big ups to Zozobra. Such a great band that no one really knows about. Never heard Cave-In but I may give it a chance.
I agree for the most part. The ratio of songs I like to ones I don't has got to be something like 1 to 10.

So what if you don't like Rush. I'm a huge fan, but don't expect everybody to be. It's really personal preference, and anybody denigrating you for that is just...well you know.
As far as the topic goes...want to talk lining up for flaming;

Dan Briggs of Between the Buried and Me. The music never picked up with me, no idea why. I like a lot of progressive music, but it's really the chugs and growls that lost my interest. Still, I recognize that they are insanely gifted musicians; Briggs is by no means the weak link either.
+1000 completely wasted talent. he's great... and for some reason (probably of James and Lars' design) you can't hear him at all during live shows.
Gotta go with ABBA that guy could play bass. Do not even know his name but, those songs had some killer bass lines I have to admit
