Well I hate to bum you out but I’m pulling it. I’m actually offended that I dropped the price so low and got nothing, and now that I don’t need the money, I’m not going to rip myself off.

It’s usually not that low a signal.

Agreed. If one is in a position where the money isn’t absolutely necessary, keep the gear and wait for the right buyer. I’m liking to sell a bass and I’d rather keep it (it’s a great bass) and find a use for it than give it away. Same with my REDDI. If I go a different direction, I’d have to be really sure before I put the REDDI up for sale.

I'm looking at a number of neat DIs right now and the Warm Audio stuff keeps catching my eye and @scubaduba has a really neat small footprint tube di that's caught my eye.

There is one other passive DI I'd love to check out though, mainly just our of curiosity--the ACME Motown DI: Acme Audio Manufacturing Company
But it has no "through" output. For recording that's fine, but it wouldn't make it as useful for live.

Haha just saw this one, sounded like most of the videos I've seen. Doesn't seem to me worth the extra bucks

The concept was what the creator stated in to the begining. He used to own a Reddi. Has a chance to buy it back but didn't know if the money was worth spending again.

Sure, that is his reason for doing the video, but what the viewer is supposed to draw from that is a concept itself.

I gotcha, I quoted your message but my response was aimed more towards the general audience. As YouTube addicts I think many of us are getting hyper critical of content and sometimes don't see the forest for the trees.

The issue with a passive bass into a passive DI box is that you lose some highs with very long cable runs. That's why active DI boxes were invented. In reality though, the highs lost are barely noticeable to bassists. Guitars will show it a bit more and you'd need a really long cable run, like an arena/stadium show for it to be an issue.

Also, the whole passive/active issue is irrelevant if you're plugging into pedals before the DI. If you have just one pedal that's buffered or always on then the signal the DI box receives is the same whether you're using a passive or active bass.

Passive di definitely seems like a non issue.

Yeah, but it looks cool! I can see that sitting on my studio desk. But yeah, there's certainly other things I could spend $500 on....

I've been whining for a while on talk ass about people referring to peal preamps as "DIs". A DI box is something else with a different use. We've reached a point in history where people make mistakes and refuse to be corrected. Then the term loses its meaning.



Using a real DI box doesn't stop you from over driving the signal though. You can still add drive with a pedal or at the board, in the mix, etc. The truth is that it's both confusing and misleading, especially to beginners, when people refer to preamps as DIs. All the young players on talkbass think they need a preamp pedal, which they call a DI, when in reality very few pros use them and they certainly are not a necessity.

I agree but I have seen them labelled as DI output on amplifiers.

Could you clear something up for me on this subject? Does the line out of a hybrid amp accomplish the same thing as a tube DI? Two different roads to the same destination?

Not really a functional difference, more a semantic one.
