AX5B Compression Question

I need help figuring out the compressor settings on my Pedal. A little background first. I play and practice in a church space, I plug my Bass directly into a AX5B, and plug that into an Amp(Peavy TKO 115) and have the the the Pre-Amp out connected to a DI Box.

The problem is, I am getting a loud Twack sound that bounces off the back wall of the church whenever I slap the Bass. I have attempted to adjust the compression settings all the way up and back down, and it never goes away. The only way I can get rid of the sound is to turn the pedal off. Does anyone know how to set the compression on this pedal to get rid of that sound, and raise the sustain levels like compression is known to do?

What sort of controls does the comp have? Gain, Threshold? Compression? Attack/Release?

does it do the same thing with the limiter? On mine I've found the limiter and the compressor sound very similar.

I have not messed with the limiter a whole lot yet, If it will do the trick then I will start playing around with those settings.

The Compressor only has Sens and Level
The Limiter has Ratio, Threshold, Level, and Attack

Start with the comp "off", just to set the limiter. Set the limiter to its max ratio, and a short attack (maybe not the absolute minimum, you'll have to experiment and adjust). Set the limiter threshold to its highest level, then start playing. Start lowering the threshold a bit at a time, playing the way you normally do that gets the "twack", until you notice the twack going away. Read my FAQ for an explanation of threshold, but basically it sets the point where the limiter takes hold of your signal.

Once you've got the limiter set, then you can add a wee bit of compression, for added sustain.

In both cases, the "level" control is for bringing your signal to the unity gain level that you want, so the output of the effect is the same average level as the output of your bass with no effect.
