Double Bass Azola EUBs Megathread

Phones are not being answered either; I have tried several times within the past few weeks. I hope that it's because they are extremely busy, or on vacation, and not a family/health issue.........or just plum tired of dealin' with us ;)
Hi-

I received several emails from Jill today. She indicated she had been in the hospital for awhile being treated for an infection-sounds like it was pretty bad. Good news is that she says she's home now and on the mend.

I didn't know Jill was ill... I've met Steve several times (bought a Stingray from him years ago here in SD) - He's always been a focused, dare I say grumpy guy when I've talked to him, but Jill has always been like a little bit of sunshine to balance him, all smiles. Hope she's okay.

My orig style Bug, makes a "fuzzy" sort of buzz sound while plucking all notes, when I pan to the stock mag pup. I get this thru my headphone amp and LMK-II/B2 rig. I changed the battery twice, and swapped cables. The fuzz is still there. Any ideas?:hmm:

Is it hum?
Do you hear that when you're not playing?
Is this problem "new" (did it appear only recently?)

What's the mag pup, a Pierre Joseph String Charger?
Can it be simply loose and buzz on the fingerboard?

Only when I'm playing francois. I don't know what type of mag pup it is; it is factory installed. The pup is tight up against the f-board. It's not a "hum", it's a fuzzy sounding buzz.

Clean the pan pot with some contact cleaner/spray, check the solder connections everywhere in the wiring layout. If you have the skill, re-solder them even if they look good.

What kind of onboard preamp does the bass have? Could be that the mag pu is overdriving the input there.

If you can, disconnect the mag pickup straight into your amp. The sound should be clean. Same with the piezo pu.

The bass has the oem Azola pre in it; that's all I know about it :hmm:
Sounds like a great Idea, I'll touch up all the solder points and then run the mag straight into the amp.

Today I tested the mag by itself, it's clean sounding. I checked the solder points on the board that the pan pot is connected to, plus I cleaned the vol and pan pots. I still have the same buzz sound. It's possible that the mag is over driving the pre. I only notice this fuzz sound when plucking low notes on the A and E strings; not on the D & G strings. I also found a trim pot on the pan pot board, which is separate from the preamp board. I'm curious as to what this trim pot is for:eyebrow:

I had one, too. It was a great instrument. The reason I parted with mine? It was my only upright and I was getting called on to play a good number of bowed parts. The trouble was that my Bugbass was not up to the task. It had a fantastic pizzicato sound, but I couldn't get a consistent arco sound. So ultimately I wound up trading my Bugbass for an NS WAV4 and some cash.

But I have to echo the comments on the fine folks at Azola. They were always very, very helpful.
