B string on a sadowsky?

But......but......Sean, you were supposed to hear mine first!

A little suggestion: if you want versatility primarily, Roger's PJ is the way to go. Ninety percent of a P and 70% of a J is pretty versatile, plus a mixed tone that is all its own.

I'm not worried, though. Whichever one you get this time, you'll be getting the other later. Rick Tocchet has posted the odds on that at 3-1.

Oh, I'm still coming to check yours out. I just wanted the clock to start ticking. Long wait you know!

I'd like to share a dissenting opinion. Unlike many of the other folks here, I greatly prefer the JJ configuration with single-coils over the PJ configuration. I've played several of the PJs and the somewhat blurrier tone of the B-string just doesn't do it for me at all. It just goes to show you, one setup isn't going to please everybody, because there are cats that rave about the B strings on their PJs. My recommendation is to go with the tone that YOU really want and need. If you need a P-bass tone, then go with a PJ setup. Roger's PJs are as good as they get. In my case, I love the clean, tight, throaty jazz-bass tone of Roger's excellent single-coil JJ pickups. The vintage tone control gives me plenty of flexibility, and when I need a little more woody thump I just slighlty favor the neck pickup ala' Tommy Shannon. My JJs give me all the flexibility that I need, along with a killer slap tone.

Whatever your choice, I am sure that the final result will be superb. I have two custom V5s: one Teal green and the other '59 burst quilt-top. Both basses have single-coil pickups, custom spacing at the nut and side LEDs in the neck. I was so pleased with Roger's work that I've ordered a custom quilted Koa fretless V5 with LEDs.

Good luck with your new custom, and welcome to the club!

Ben

Decided to err on the side of flexibility. I'm having it modded to accept both (reverse) P/J and J/J configurations.

Just make sure you buy the extra pickup! LOL You are going to love it man. And, like I said, IF for some stragne reason you don't like it, I would probably buy it from you.

NOW, NOW, NOW folks.... This is not a new Mike Winnen Sadowsky Bass Guarantee Buy Back Program! LOL

My wife would kill me. Bad enough Roger leant me a bass and I had to have it and bought it. Although, not too many would not want to keep em'!

Hrm, I wonder if they just sell one J pickup for the neck, or do I have to buy a pair...hrm.

I can't speak for Simon but I found that I could get all that the jazz offered and much more. More bottom end, more mid range cut, just as tight and punchy, more growl if I want it, I can get 95% of the J bass tone AND I get a REAL SOUNDING P Bass. Blended, the pickups are remarkable. Just an extremely versatile beast. One is Alder/Morado and the other is Ash/Maple. As you would expect one is a little brighter and the other warmer. I have been beyond happy with both.

I couldn't agree more with Mike , plus IMO you can always get a J Metro later and you wont get a P/J Metro (at least for now), so spend the big bucks on the P/J, I have 2 and love them all the way.

I tried one for the first time at Bass Central yesterday. I thought it was good, but I guess I would have to say that it is even with a Stingray 5 in terms of the B string. I really like SR5s, so that is not a knock on Sadowsky. I am a sucker for the grand piano type sound that I can get on some 35" scales basses like Modulus. Lakland, or Roscoe. The Sadowsky does not deliver that kind of sound.

I've also had an SR5, and I agree. The B on the one I had was awesome. I'd still be playing it if they had 3/4" string spacing! But alas, they do not. That, and with the SR5 I kept pulling the G string off the fingerboard. Not sure what was up with that.

Hows the B string holdup on a 5er sadowsky? I am gettin my final options in but could go either 5 or 4, as i sometimes find myself in the lower register of the B..... how is it for a 34" scale? I'm playin an elrick 5 now and diggin the 35" scale.....
I haven't read this entire thread... I've got a Sadowsky PJ5 and the B is fine. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Roger makes a great bass.
