Double Bass Baby Bass megathread

When I was researching for my bass purchase I was considering the Ray Ramirez Caribbean Elite. It has both the magnetic and piezo pickups. So the bass could get the baby bass tone as well as a jazzy tone. The only thing that kept me from purchasing the bass was that it was $1000 over my budget. I went with a BSX Allegro instead.

Hi there, I just picked up a lovely 60s Ampeg baby bass and would like a fibreglass flight case for this. Does anyone know of any manufacturers that still have a mould for this or can offer a custom option, preferably in Europe as I am the UK? Could still do a US sourced case but would add >20% to my cost due to import duty and shipping.

Failing that do you think it would be possible to customise (with internal padding) a downsized double/upright bass case, eg, for a 1/2 bass, to make this work?

There is a company in Canada that makes flight cases for BBs. I think they are about $1k. Invalid Link Removed

For alot less money, you could get a soft case from Ray Ramirez: Link Removed

Mooradain makes a great cover. It's pricey, but alot less than the flight case. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Mooradian is very popular among acoustic double bass players.

Yes, just take off the strings (make sure you don't lose the metal discs under the bridge) and unscrew the neck bolt. Then tap the bolt out with a hammer. (Once the bolt is halfway out, I like to use a screwdriver--put the tip of the screwdriver on the bolt and tap the butt of the screwdriver with the hammer). Be careful though...this may require a bit of force and you can risk splitting the seems if you use too much. Once the bolt is out, you can wiggle the neck off. Pull it upwards. There is a flange that inserts into the body.

It is pretty simple, but, as with anything, just be careful and take your time if it is stuck.

Thanks NickyBass, I checked out SBC - nice case but shipping to UK was more than the cost of the case (>$1,000) and thats before throwing in the 20% import duty to me!!!!

I already have a lightweight case (so I don't really need a gigbag) but I am 99% sure it would not withstand baggage handlers throwing it into the cargo hold. I suspect my best bet is to get a custom made case from a local manufacturer (there are quite a few in the UK).
