Double Bass Baby Bass megathread

My BB doesn't have a truss rod. At least I don't think it does. Then again it's been ages since I had the neck off. Droping the bass off tomorrow at a local luthier to see what he thinks, then going from there.

There is an adjustment on the underside of the fingerboard. It takes a special tool - but I have turned it with needle nose pliers before.

I have a copy of the owner's manual, but I can't find it right now.

Good to bring it to the luthier anyway - it might need some planing.

I noticed a BB neck that Bruce Johnson has a pic of on his site has a truss rod: http://www.xstrange.com/bbneck.html

But mine is absent:

It doesn't look like there was ever anything there- should there be?

I don't know for sure if they all had the truss rod or not.

This rod - BTW, does not adjust the neck like on a guitar - but only the portion of the fingerboard that extends from the neck.

I guess it is possible that your fingerboard was replaced at some point - it looks like a thicker piece of ebony than I am used to seeing. A luthier who is used to working on a traditional upright probably would not bother with building or re-installing a truss rod in a new fingerboard.

how did you purchase your bass? The gentleman who builds these basses requires cash payment thur western union or money gram and it gets sent to Colombia? is this how you made your purchase? Its not a secure form of payment, I am not comfortable taking a chance....

I sold my MOG Classic Baby and picked up a MOG Travel bass instead. It passed through customs with no broken parts and no damage done to the body. The finish on the new bass is alot better than the old bass. It isn't perfect, but it looks thick and durable. It has a tone similar to the Blady and Ray Ramirez basses that I've tried. I think it needs a preamp to really get the most out of it. As I said earlier in the thread, besides the Azola basses, I haven't heard any 'copy' that sounds quite like the originals, but the MOG sounds pretty good. It is very lightweight. It looks like nice lumber.

If I had to have only one bass, it would be a full sized Baby Bass, but since I already have an original, I like having the small bodied MOG for certain situations.

I think the issue is that there is no access to PayPal accounts in Colombia. When I purchased my basses, I went through a partner of his who lives outside of Colombia and accepted PayPal. So I payed with PayPal. I am not sure if they are working together now or not. I am pretty sure that Sendel only accepts wired payments too. I don't know what to recommend.

Hey Alvaro! How is the Sendel treating you?

It works really good, Nick. It's been 14 years since I bought it brand-new direct from Mr. Fernando García, and I'm very used to it. Although I still think it should be louder. Not that I want a lot of volume. Just that I don't like having to crank up the amp so much to be heard. Actually, last year I talked to Mr. Ortega asking for the price of a MOG baby bass, but since I had to spend some money repairing my car after a crash (nobody injured, fortunately), I had to revisit my priorities.
