Double Bass Baby Bass megathread

To all of you who are skeptical about purchasing one of these fine instruments from Colombia. Off the Bat Andres Mauricio was very helpful and understanding when I bombarded him with all my questions. From start to finish I was always in the loop as to the progress of the bass. The bass was shipped via fedex and was packaged accordingly. It took about 25 minutes between putting it together and tunning it before I was playing sweet Salsa with my new M.O.G BABY BASS.
I would not hesitate to purchase from Andres as I already have ordered my second Baby Bass in White

J.P
I am looking to purchase one of these wooden basses from MOG, but no one has mentioned how the bass was purchased? I have been speaking with Andreas who has been very patient with all my purchase and shipping questions but my biggest concern is the fact I have to send cash with no form of receipt or proof of purchase. If any damage was to occur or I just never receive the bass at all im out over $1700.... this is a very big risk for a purchase from overseas with little guarantee. still waiting from responses from people who have purchased from MOG

I had the same concerns. So I ordered a bass from Ray Ramirez in Puerto Rico. Being a part of the US, I think it is a much safer bet. Also it would attract a lot less attention from Customs.

I had a wooden MOG baby bass on ebay for sale but was not able to sell it. The bass is a bit heavier than an ampeg but the finish is nice, not excellent, just ok. I have a Ramirez and the finish wasn't as good as the MOG's however, that was my particular case. I also have a Zorko and an Ampeg and no other replica is made the same or sounds the same. I will be putting the MOG back on ebay soon since I just wont be playing it. Mine was sent fedex and was not damaged by customs. However, a plastic pipe covering the bolt for the length adjustment came broken and one of the tuners did not work but they have been replaced.

Well, I never intended to collect. The 66 Ampeg has been donated to my old boarding school music dept. I bought the Azola recently, sort of as a back up to the Ramirez. The R sounds better, and plays better.

I was wondering if you purchased the Azola recently. I sold mine a couple of months ago on Ebay. If that is it, I am glad to see it is with a good family:cool: (I don't recall sending it to Canada though?)

Karl, I live in Sweden, Europe and a year ago I ordered a red BB from MOG. No problem at all receiving it, but like som many others (like user "Salsa Bass") it was damaged meaning that the black plastic pipe covering the bolt for the length adjustment came broken and the edgy parts had damaged the surface of the body. :(

Just got my BB back from the luthier. He made a new nut out of rosewood, planed and sanded the fingerboard, and cleaned up a sloppy repair job done years ago when the neck broke down near the heel. With everything he did, I was able to put the original bridge back on and with a few adjustments the playability is now much much better.

He did point out that the stings really should be replaced since there isn't much string/winding left on a couple of them and they are likely to break soon. I haven't bothered googling strings yet - so any recommendations? Would prefer something with lower tension if possible. Does anyone make black tapewound strings in a BB length? Also need to get a decent gig bag / case for it as well. Any pointers there?
