Backup basses...because only one bass is inconceivable!

What's your backup?
I own these two just in case I ever get invited to one of those “Ummm, we’re only looking for Fender players” engagements.

Seriously, they both get the job done...and what more can anyone want?

You had me until “active bass.” Is that what you told your wife? I don’t see how a 9V battery in your guitar makes it generically different.

I took an xotic xj-t with Fralins to an audition and got back an email: "We're looking for a Fender player". Of course, I was told, when I asked about specifics, "oh, bring anything you're comfortable with". Of course, the
xotic is 3 times more expensive than a normal Jazz, plus I have 3 jazzes, a P original 60, etc. The xotic sounded better than a Fender for the type of music I was told we were auditioning on.

Never assume that guitarists or drummers know what the hell they'e talking about when they mention a type of bass. FIRST, take out a P (any P, even MIM) and
then ask them, "is that okay or do you want something else." That keeps it simple, for the simple minded.

I guess I'm lucky: who'd want to play with idiots in their 50's who don't know what to spec or simply ask for regarding an audition?
Another thing I've learned in my return to playing: NEVER EVER under any circumstances take a European bass to audition with a "Country" band, at least in SE North Carolina.,

Bought the Squier after trying a few dozen J basses, Fender and Squier...big surprise even though I'd owned other Squiers.
Found the Fender even though I wasn't planning on buying a bass.
Haven't put it down all week!

Ok Ok Ok, though I would choose through the other ones I listed for a backyup I think if I had to choose my main backup bass it would be this ol gal...

Tonight’s hit. Fretless is backup, jack on the YYD is a little worn, needs some attention.

I was just being a goofball.

1) I don't have to telk my wife anything. I don't spend more than $1,000 without letti g her know. She does the same for me.

2) All of my current basses are passive..... and I don't own a fretless.

Since the 80s I have never brought a backup bass. Extra batteries, strings, and tools. Only needed to change the battery once. Currently, the one bass is passive, so I leave the battery home

I've had broken strings, dropped basses and weird electronics failures during gigs in the deep past, so I appreciate the need for a backup. There's few things worse than interrupting a gig due to equipment failure.

Right now I'm not in a position to take a true backup to gigs - I'm playing upright in a swing band and Bass VI in an indie project. I use my Hofner or Longhorn (both strung with flats) to cover the upright should a disaster occur. Having two Bass VIs seems to me to be an indulgence. The first low-profile gig for the indie project is this week - I'm likely to go with just the one bass and hope for the best. I can always hum the bass parts if things go south....
