I don’t know about a backup. These are my only 2. I guess I could say my husbands Sire V3 5 string is my backup.

My Yamaha RBXJM2’s.

Identical in every way (except one has slightly lighter hardware): same model, color, strings, batteries, strap locks, cases, setup; Fretfx... I can go from one to the other with no adjustment at all.

I only have one other bass - a Carvin LB76f and I’ve got everything I need.

I have quite a few basses. I never bring more than one to a gig, unless I have a specific couple of songs in the set requiring a fretted or flatwounds. It has not been an issue for almost four decades and I don’t expect it to start being one.

I have dozens of Basses and a few different gigs and I never go with just one bass. Ironically I have a guitar player who brings one and breaks a string on damn near every set of every gig. I don’t think I’ve broken a string this century but I’m not taking any chances on a gig where I’m getting paid. Extra batteries, strings and a second amp too. I guess it was all my years as a military musician.

I have no backup for my 6 string fretted or my 5 string fretless. I built them and don't want or need a backup for either. Instead I have backup strings and batteries.

'Backup bass' implies playing live, not a bass collection. In this regard some bring one, some don't - it's all subjective. I play in two bands but not for a living and I only bring one (passive) bass, one amp and a few pedals. In and out in one trip.

In the NHL each team has a backup goalie, although they’re mostly used to give the number one netminder the day off, or they’re subbed in when the game gets out of hand. But in addition, the arena has a backup to the backup, which is a local guy who can step in for either team in case both goalies are unavailable.

On the other hand, most high school teams just have the one goalie and one set of goalie pads.

So, is your gig high school or pro?

I just acquired the on on my left, your right (the one with two pickups), thinking it would be very similar to the pointier one and with the intention of it serving as backup. Turns out it has a noticeably chunkier neck, stock pickups even hotter than the Lace I dropped in the pointier one, and a tone of its own despite very similar construction. All good problems to have, haha. They both get the job done, and in my style of music, nobody asks anybody to get a Fender (though I'd happily have a few of those, too).

My primary player is a MIM Fender Precision, rosewood fretboard. My secondaries are a modded SX Precision w/ chrome flats and SD SPB3 Quarter Pounders and a Ibanez Talman 310.
