"Backwards" effect?

The OP is clearly a reverse delay tho.
That song is from 1984, so I doubt that's a reverse delay... I really think that's recorded backwards.
The part in the OP is a normally recorded part played backwards. It isn't being done live in the studio. It isn't a reverse delay, that's why you hear the swells. It is the envelope of a decaying note playing in reverse.

^^^This. Backwards recording on the original track. But I agree w/ everyone who's opined that the best way to approximate this sound live would be a reverse delay. Key word being "approximate"

btw, there's a postumously released mini-EP by Dali's Car called In Glad Aloneness that contains a re-arrangement of that track. Same approach to the bassline, clearly similar motifs, materials, and backwards effect...quite possibly culled from the original 1984 track, or possibly alternate takes from that session. But also brilliantly reinvented. Highly recommended for fans of the original.

Oh, another stompbox that could help achieve that sound: the old Maestro Envelope Modifier. Stick one of those in front of a couple short slap-back delays and prepare for all sorts of "Artemis"-like goodness. Or stick one of those in front of a reverse delay and mind=blown!

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks! I've giggles a number of them and listened to samples.

The Danelectro one that someone mentioned, the Back Talk, sounds *awesome*... but, $300...

I might check out the clones of the Boss pedal mentioned, the Behringer or Mooer ones. I own a volume pedal, but I haven't been able to do a convincing "backwards" sound with it...

A reverse delay does sound better, to me, but I need to listen to more samples and maybe check a few out in the store.

I'm not looking to cover the piece I linked to in the OP, BTW--it's just an example of the tone I'm looking for. (That song is from 1984, so I doubt that's a reverse delay... I really think that's recorded backwards.) But I do play fretless, so at least I've got that part taken care of.

(Side note: that album is the one that made me pick up the bass to begin with--fretless, of course. I was in my mid-teens and a friend played that album to me, and my jaw hit the floor as they say. "What on earth is that sound? Is that a... bass guitar? How does he make it sound like that?" I bought my first bass, a cheap used P bass with the frets removed, not long after that.)

Danelectro also made the Wasabi FWD and REV delay. Probably cheaper than the Back Talk as it has not been pimped by Juan.

I have one. I'm not using at the moment because It was given to me by a person who I consider to be a terrible , terrible human and I kicked the power jack a little while ago and messed it up. It is a very fun pedal though.

So if I get some kind of ...

... reverse-delay-swell effect going ...

... and record a track of it backwards ...

... will I destroy the space-time continuum?

@Alien8 Thanks, how could I forget Sneak Attack, a brand new pedal !?!

Thanks to all contributors to swelling the swell list of swell from hell...

Swellegant...

I tried running reverse delay into reverse delay to see if it would reverse the reverseyness. It did not. It only got weirder. Maybe a small tear in space-time. Probably just the people nip.

OK, I haven’t forgotten about this thread. I just got hit with vet bills, and GAS will have to be put on the back burner for now. So… yeah. Meanwhile, thanks for all of the suggestions! I’ll get to them in a month or two.

good taste you hve there but you aspire for the very difficult. best i can offer is "good luck".

Thank you, and thank you *bows*

I enjoy my Boss DD-3. You can find those relatively cheap.

I thought the DD-3 doesn’t have a reverse effect?

PS: Any DIY stuff should still be considered, you can always get somebody else to do the soldering for you. Ex: BYOC Lazy Sprocket can be had from Axe and You Shall Receive.

I appreciate the suggestion but I really don’t know how to solder, and I don’t think I know anyone who can. That web site looks promising though.

An envelope is an interesting idea… any suggestions for an envelope that would do what you suggest that are cheaper than the Maestro Envelope Modifier? The only one I could find was $360.

Who’s Juan? Anyway I wasn’t able to find any Danelectro Wasabi Delays online at all! If yours is fixable, would you feel like selling it? ;-)

Juan Alderete - Pedals and Effects, The Mars Volta, Racer-X, etc. I don't know if I would be comfortable selling someone something that has been broken due to my clumsiness more than once.(I messed up the output jack once by kicking it too - I fixed it but still) I don't want to sell you something that might fail on you.
