It may sound better at 12v. This circuit is really particular about the voltage on the heaters. At 9v it works just fine, but there is some good evidence that it's not optimal for tube life. Like, you'll get 2000 hours out of it rather than 6000. Powering it at 12 is theoretically better for the life of the tube, but 1000 - 2000 hours is still a good long time for a $9 tube.

Running it at 9v is sort of a convenience for those of us without a multi - tap powering system that can give 9 and 12 volts at the same time.

You wouldn't want to run this on batteries though, unless you really like buying 9volts.

You get plenty of dirt with the gain cranked at 12v. 18 is not recommended.

12v is actually the optimal place to be running it because a 12ax7 likes to see 12.6 v on the heaters in series or 6.3 v in parallel. 9 is under powering it, which isn't optimal and 18 would be over-powering it. 12 is the sweet spot if you have the power adapter capacity. 9 is really for convenience sake.

As an update to the earlier question the 12ay7 runs fine at 12v, but still doesn't quite nail the dirt like the 12ax7.

I'm a proud owner and friend of the shoe. Therefore, I want to share that with the TB community by showing my affiliation with a "club" number. One interesting thing about the wayfarer is that it can take on a different character depending on whether or not you use the horns in cabs. I keep mine off and it gives the warm b-15 vibe, but as you dial more horn into your cab mix it amps up the aggressiveness of the pedal so you can even get some Motörhead-esque tone. Think of Lemmy's tone on "Ace of Spades" or Fat Mike's grindy bass on " the Decline" by NOFX.

I found this out playing on a borrowed Ampeg fridge in a rehearsal studio.

Got mine on Friday! I haven't spent as much time as I'd like to with it yet, but should have some time tomorrow. Just an FYI, it doesn't seem to like my 18v active pickups, but again, I haven't spent much time with it. My guess is if I turn the volume on my bass down it will work out a little better...

Love then build quality of the Baddy One Shoes... They feel so solid and are quite small in comparison to some others. Nice job Jim!

Just got my Wayfarer. I've only had a little time to mess with it but I'm really digging it so far. Very touch sensitive and it doesn't molester my tone. My bass still sounds like a Ric plugged into an 800rb. The pedal is a bit higher gain than I was expecting, but just roll back to volume halfway and its almost (in a good way) clean. I can't wait to run it through my gig rig, my 410 has a slight mid scoop and with the combo of that cab and the WF I should be in warm wooly heaven.

Yep! The volume knob, for me, is the key. The majority of time has been with my passive P-bass and you can really dial in some mild to aggressive tones with it. I really like this pedal the more I play with it. It's cool to be able to have that kind of control right at your fingertips. Surprisingly, rolling back the volume on the bass, with it on, doesn't change the overall volume nearly as much as I initially thought it would. The dirty switch adds a little volume bump as well as dirt. Still playing with it but so far my impression on the Wayfarer Overdrive is overwhelmingly positive! :hyper:

I'm going to make them as special orders, but I'm not going to make a run of them to keep in stock. In fact, with the little Rocket on the way I doubt I'll be doing full runs of anything, but everything will be available for order.

I'm calling it the "Wild Goose" for shorthand.

I'm making one for Paul right now, so I'll try to post a pic of that in process.

My thoughts exactly. I've only played at "bedroom" levels so far but we'll see how it "fares" with a full band.
