Baer Amplification Megathread!

So Bruce, let me see if I got this straight. You want a big, fat bottom that is smooth and you like it delicious up top? (I'm not even going to touch the "quick off the finger" comment)

Fine! you've unraveled my intricate system of communication to hide the fact that everything I say is akin to the lyrics of the average Steely Dan song. Well, you got me.......

Now get over here and let me slap yur ass!

These cabs have me intrigued. Particularly the 12/6. I've been looking for something to replace an SWR 4x10. My apologies if this had been covered -- I already know I'd be in a different universe tonally, but where would I stand volume-wise? I wouldn't expect it to really 'keep up' with my cab but I wouldn't really need it to -- I hardly ever push my 4x10 hard. For lack of a better metric, I generally play moderate to moderately loud club/bar gigs without PA help. Usually just past the threshold of needing ear plugs(drummer -- grrrr). Would a single ML112 work for me?..

As an ex SWR and Eden fanatic, I can honestly say that I am pleased way beyond my expectations with a pair of ML-112's

IMO, no.
But, two totally would.

ymmv...
"is XXX loud enough for my band" is just a completely subjective thing, IME.

One man's too loud is another man's "I can't even hear that, ***?"

Oh I hear ya. Let me try this -- my gigs are loud enough that my SWR 2x10 is on the ragged edge of farting all night, with occasional forays into actual fartage. ML112 comfy at that level?

If you are pushing a good 210 like that into farting, then don't expect a single 112, even one of these "super 12's" to get you out of jail for free. It's just not realistic. You probably need a 212 or dual 112's.

If your pushing your 210 past it's limits on a regular basis, I would say you need more than one ML112 to replace that. Some players like the sound of certain cabs when pushed hard, like an SVT, as the sound of those drivers going into break up becomes an important part of their sound. I've never been quite convinced the high powered neo drivers break up in quite the same pleasing way, so I prefer to keep them out of that range.

I would agree that it sounds like you need to up your cabinet arsenal and go with more, or bigger cabs. I think the ML212 or ML115 would be a better match for the volumes you are trying to achieve.

I think Roger is being a little conservative there :) SWR's 2x10s are notoriously flubby in the xmax area.

Admittedly, I've never tried that cab, but I do have had some experience with customers who expect a little too much from a 112 cab, so I try to jeep things conservative. I actually just went back and revised the wattage ratings on the cabs for just that reason, as I think some people take the term "super 12" a little too literally. Our driver has the X-max of a 3012HO and not an 3012LF, so I try to make it clear that you can't expect the power handling of an LF from these cabs.

I agree Roger, and appreciate your approach. Those SWR cabs are also notoriously bottom heavy, so if someone went to an ML112, they might try to push the lows really hard on their head to get that same boomy response, which could in turn put them right back where they started.

Yes, it's pretty loud but I can't really ask it for real low end at gig volume. That's what the 4x10 is for. But I'm looking for something better sounding/smaller/lighter than it(even the 210 is a boat anchor). Didn't really want to go all the way to a 2x12 but maybe that's what I'll need. Maybe the 1x15?
