Baer Amplification Megathread!

Monique manages to coax some sweet tones, no taming needed. The ML112 just kills. Did a trio hit tonight in a typical tough room. This time I was stuffed back in an alcove. Had the cab sitting on the cart, Monique into the power section of the Puma. Perfect tone, volume, and support. Two tracks, first one MGS (dual coils), second the YYD on the bridge pup.

I've done a pair of Baers with the TH500: nicely "chewy" (HT: KJung for the term) when I wanted it to be.

Also done the pair of Baers with a Markbass F500: smoother, for when I wanted that.

All good! A striking feature about these cabs, to me, is how they respond so accurately to whatever I choose to dial in on the amp, for fingerstyle and slap.

And they're loud, and light.

We've been auditioning replacement personnel the last week or so. Every one of 'em commented on how good the rig (F500 pushing a single ML112) sounded.

So...that would be a MarkBaer, yeah?

Well only had about an hour or so but I like it a lot. Briefly compared them to my berg hd210s before I left to trade them and I still have a pair of the gk neo112s to compare to. More on that later. I have a stock STM 900 and another STM 900 that I have swapped tubes on to run the ml112. Played my lull pj and my Skjold and was just diggin the skjold. Good thing for Roger he has a killer Skjold on the way!

Also talked shop with Roger on my order confirmation ( probably more than he wanted too), and he was completely cool and patient with my never ending questions. Thanks Roger!

Has anyone tried arco double bass with a ML112. I'm sure these guys would be perfect for me with BG, but I'm worried that the mid driver would accentuate the part of the spectrum that gets really grainy with bow work. I frequently run my wife's cello through my rig as well. I usually cut quite a bit out of the upper mids to get a nice smooth bow sound.

I haven't heard the ML112 with DB and a bow yet, but we did have a guy at NAMM show up with his viola and give the cabs a spin. I thought it sounded great and the the violist(?) really liked it and commented that he was hearing overtones and harmonics through the rig that he typically only hears in the studio. This guy had impeccable technique, so I wasn't hearing anything that jumped out at me as harsh, but I would imagine that if there are some elements to your technique that need a little cleaning up, the ML's will be more than happy to point them out. We also had Steve Adelson show up with his Chapman Stick and he was really impressed with the cabs as well.

fwiw my looper pedals sound better through the ML112 than any cab I've used. Not sure what's going on with that but I'm not going to complain. I think these cabs are just way better in the upper mids than typical tweeter designs. Seems like there is more space for the tone since it isn't trying to extend to 20khz. Yeah, I know, too technical :D

Most of the negative effects from heavy orchestral style bowing should be taken care of via eq anyway before it gets to the cab. The production noises of a DB would sit much lower than a viola, however. It might be along the lines of rolling back the VTC and then boosting highs on a BG which I find a very useful eq technique.... The 6 on the ML would add a little air back from the range taken out maybe. I'd love to try it at some point, anyway!
