Baer Amplification Megathread!

Hopefully this will work:

(Clips recorded at 'moderate gig volumes' about 30 degrees off axis, about 10 feet from cab with the Zoom Q3 digital recorder).

Clip 1: Nordstrand VP5 (modern voiced ash/maple 5 string passive P Bass with broken in Dunlop Nickel Wounds) through the Streamliner (representative of the 'fat and tubey side of amp voicings) and the Markbass F500 (representative of the more neutral SS side of amp voicings). I unfortunately didn't do a great job gain matching (I record these clips in real time with very little prep, so a bit rough sometimes), so don't overinterpret that difference in volume and fatness between the two heads.

Clip 2: Alleva-Coppolo LM5 (ash/maple 70's style J with single coils, broken in Hi Beams) with the F500. Killer combination (just like the Streamliner with the P).

Clip 3: A-C again with the F500, this time comparing the ML112 to the Berg AE210, to give the listener a feel for the difference between the mid driver versus a very well executed but more traditional tweeter loaded cab.

It is a special cab IMO. In the same tone universe to me as the AE line of 10's, but as you can hear, a bit bigger down low and more present in the upper midrange.

Thanks. I was actually very happy with the sound quality of all those clips I put up back in the day. With a good set of phones, you can hear pretty well what is going on through the entire range of the rig. Only one data point, but every bit of info is hopefully helpful, since very few have the opportunity of trying this stuff.

Yes. You can dial that in with the Baer though if you have a good semi-parametric low mid control on your amp.

My buddy B String has spent quite a bit of time gigging his AE210 (he has the original horizontal version that has a more aggressive upper mid response than my 'version 2' that has a more smooth crossover up top), and the ML112, and basically describes the same thing.

Since the AE210 is no longer available, the ML112 is a very good option for those who are looking for that sort of 'punchy' tone with lots of paper cone warmth up top. And, you get more true low end as a bonus!

I assume my ML112 clips are quite representative of the ML212 tone, there would just be 'more to love'!

I now have 4 bands of semi parametric to play with oooh, still trying to get my head around setting it up though, but in general have found taking out some high mid and adding some low mid has served my purposes quite well. The Baer produces a huge amount of natural low end with my amp so I am dialling that back as well, I guess similar to how you would have to on the Streamliner.

By the way, the Tech21 VT Bass Deluxe through any amp's power section into the ML112 is TOTALLY killer in every way. If you want a vintage sounding rig but already have a great "clean" head, then adding a preamp peddle like the VT Bass or Tone Hammer is just too easy. The VT Bass has sounded a bit harsh for me through many other cabs because of the tweeter. With the ML112 though, it really shines in a beautiful way that I haven't really experienced since I parted with my Berg IP310 a few years back. The VT's ability to dial in that classic Ampeg grind, overdrive, or vintage glassy top end is really beautiful through the Baer. I should have tried this weeks ago.

So now I also have a VT Baer Deluxe rig at my disposal. Cool! :bassist:

Ok, here's another video... this one has various samples of all of my basses played with fingers and (poorly) with a pick.



I'm kind of bummed, because I used what I thought was a better camera, and it turns out that the camera mic couldn't handle some of the more punchy low-end tones.

So... if you hear a touch of distortion on some of the clips, that IS NOT coming from the amp. It's the mic on the camera farting out.

One of these days I'll have one of those cool cameras like Ken and I won't have to worry about that. Until then, I think this video will still give you a good example of what the Streamliner/Baer ML212 is capable of.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it and it helps you out... let me know if you have any questions!

Totally agree...I have both the TH pedal and the VT pedal into a GB SM 9.2---multiple tone presets at the tap of a toe :-)
