Band expenses

Dad: You're the girl's mother...

Mom: I'll let your son play in her band for $7,100.

Dad: Ahhhhhhhh, I'm just going to go find a cash machine.

FWIW: I don't understand why people don't use more available local recourses. For example, here where I live both the SRJC and SSU audio/video departments and students are regularly looking for band/projects for multi-camera shoots (for free).

I don't think it's about paying for a video shoot, I think it's about covering mom's overhead expenses (er, spending money).

IMO

You and your son shouldn't have to pay for these things. As stated before by many other members, it would seem the Mother/Manager is too biased toward her own child (understandably) and not necessarily the band. If they need money for recording, video shoots, promo material etc, she's going to have to book them some paying gigs. She can take her 10% for that and the rest goes into the band. The kids all earned their money and everybody walks away happy.

I'd like to get a PM too, if possible. I've read the entire thread but haven't posted since I have nothing unique to add. Everyone else has said everything I would say.

I'm curious to see the video as I have a daughter who loves all the Disney shows and music that goes with it. I feel that I have heard enough of this type of music to judge if it's "good" (in relative terms, of course). I'm not proud of my knowledge of this music, but hey, I'm trying to be a supportive dad who is interested in the things that his daughter likes. That being said, I would never in a million years pay for her to be in someone else s band.

Thanks for the PM with the video links!

I showed some of the videos to my daughter and she thought they were pretty cool. I asked her if she thought the girl, band, and music could make it alongside the Disney stars and she kind of shrugged and said, "Yeah, I think so. It's pretty good." There you go, the ringing endorsement of an 11 year old girl.

I personally thought they sounded like Green Day songs with a young girl singing about middle school themed things. Very average sounding to me. Then again, I'm not the target audience.

Watched the videos.
She is gonna make it - at least for a couple of years. Personally I cannot help but notice how that all looks/feels like Avril Lavigne. And we all know how that ended. The band looks very expandable to me

My bottom line: A band with major endorsement deals should make enough money to cover it's expenses. If not, the management is doubtable to say the least. The target group (well-situated teenagers in rebellion age) has tremendious amounts of money to spend

She's not talented enough to make it based on talent (live was atrocious) and she's not good looking enough to make it based on looks. IMHO.

There are way too many people out there with more talent & looks to boast a lot of serious competition for that type of music and targeted audience.
