By calling Nugent ignorant you lump in about 50,000,000 people in the USA alone who share many of his sentiments as shown by the 2016 election.
Problem today is no one can laugh at themselves anymore! When I was a kid my buddy who was Polish had the best Polish jokes, my Italian friend would be the first one to use certain disparaging terms aimed at Italians. I'm of French heritage, bring on the Frog jokes!

Nope, at first I called him a dick and then a delusional, right-wing clown.
I laugh with and at myself too. I'm fat, a Greek, but I'm not a racist, I'm not sexist, I don't jerk off with a gun, I don't want to arm teachers or students, etc.

I definitely believe in arming teachers. Not all. But that's for another day. I carry always have always will. When seconds count the police are only minutes away, and then, if they're Broward County deputies you're still screwed

Your position would make sense if you could prove with facts and figures that your stance on the matter will create better success.

But.... there's many bands across all genres and popularity levels that defy certain looks and still have success.

Leave them be, put on a T-shirt and blue jeans and just play bass. I'd
Much rather hear you play the part well with the band than look a certain part alone.

It's all civil until someone's political opinion clashes with someone else's. Time and again a perfectly good thread about political ramminifactions in the band business gets shut down because numbskulls can't resist inserting their civil opinions.

Unfortunately, that's what certain beyond-the-fringe unter-minority "parties" have done by wrapping a whole country's flag around their barmy ideas and claiming it's what we all stand for. Nobody beats the British for being ashamed of ourselves, and that's a shame.

I did, too. It's a fact that some imagery gets associated by some people with connotations not necessarily intended (or, in some cases, they may be) and a band can decide whether it's worth the effort or whether it detracts.

and may I be the first, on behalf of the Royal Air Force, to apologize for the naming of the Westland Lysander. Seeing as the Athenian's ships were wrecked and they weren't going anywhere, I do think (if it doesn't break forum rules) that chucking them down a hole to starve was bit 'arsh.

The good reason for that being OP announced several pages ago that he had decided against getting on stage with people who want to spew hate set to music. A lot of the stuff since has been about what politics is the OK version to espouse (I'm as guilty as anyone for thinking "this band's opinions are fine but that band's views are terrible" - human nature).

Here's a thought, before tying your band to a particular mast, though. How many bands can you think of that buck the trend and don't disappoint with their 2nd or 3rd musical outing? Yeah, me too - quite a few. Now try the same thing with a political leader/party;)

It's impossible to please everyone. There will allways be someone offended by what you say, you think , you vote, you wear.. so if you're comfortable with your own beliefs and opinions..who cares? Say what you want, play the music you want and if someone doesn't like it..it's fine.

Never go against your deep principles in order to please other people.

people's facebook pages CAN reflect on the band they are in - badly or for the better. I wouldn't know how to address this in your case. Touchy area. I might ask them to "tone it down" on their pages so as to "not offend potential fans". Maybe create a page just for their views and another associated with the music? I created a "music-only" profile back in the day and another just for myself - close friends, family. etc.

but yes, FB can definitely get in the way of a band's prospects. I myself have unfriended many musicians whose views expressed offended me. Or one band whose lead singer at a show started prattling on about his idiot politics between songs. We (me and wife) won't ever go see this band again because of it. And they are well known around here and talented. but I don't go to see bands and then be lectured about their political or social views. it's a turn-off. It's better to stay away from politics on FB, or live, for that matter. It can only get you in trouble.

but I will say this - if you can't be in a band with anyone who disagrees with your politics (and remember, just because you disagrees with theirs doesn't make them wrong or you right. They may disagree with yours and consider you extreme as well)? Make sure then you ask them up front before they join (or you join them). I think it only makes sense so as not to waste your time or theirs. For me, I don't really care that much about my band members' views on politics - I simply don't ask - but if they started posting nonsense on the band page, it would bother me a great deal and I would ask them nicely to not do that from a marketing standpoint.

Just see all these businesses that lost business for posting extreme political positions before and after the last election. Stupid. It's almost always a losing proposition. business and politics just don't mix. And a band really is a business in my most cases.

but is it YOUR band? Or are you all co-equal? Did you join them? if it's YOUR band, you can tell them simply to tone it down. that it's not good for business. But I have to say this - people tend not to react well when you tell them what they can or can't post on their FB pages. I know I wouldn't

that being said, I was in a band a year ago where I posted a meme kinda poking fun at Gino Vanelli. The guitarist/BL went nuts. why? because he likes Gino Vanelli. I told him, hey, listen, it's my page. This is not controversial. it's a JOKE. take a chill pill....it's f'ing GINO VANELLI. LOL. really??? you're offended by a meme concerning this late 70s, jeans-tucked-into-high boots-scarf-wearing-hairy-chested-playing-the-sort-of-homogenized-schmaltz-that-gave-the-70s-a-bad-name kind of guy? In reality, it was sorta poking fun at the garbage that once WAS the charts back then (you'd have to be of a certain age to understand).

People get butt-hurt WAY too easily by stuff these days. it's used frankly to silence others. but that aside...a Gino Vanelli meme? that might have been the beginning of the end between this guy and me. I won't post politics on my page in deference to being in bands (and I generally unfriend twats that do it too much) and realizing that there's no reason to offend potential fans. But you can't dictate to me otherwise what I post on my FB page. THAT is a sign to run for the exit.

but generally I keep my page my page. if someone in the band is "offended" by the stuff on my page, well, they can suck it up or lose me. there's always another band. but I'm pretty careful these days to stay away from politics too directly either. Business can only by hurt by extremist and intolerant views, whether they be from the Left or the Right
