Band Recording: In what order???

Theremin first!

Just kidding. I've usually worked from the foundation, bass and drums, on up. What comes next in the "up" part can be varied to some extent depending on the band.

What your guitarist is saying makes no sense whatsoever. I'm not sure he even knows what he's trying to say, based on your quoting of him.

Just tell him it'll be simple to "intonate the guitars on the bass," as there'll be plenty of horizontal crosstalk if the bass and drums are laid down first.

Matt
More theremin. Say hi to victoria for me

Andy, from thereminworld and levnet Oh yeah I've always recorded drums bass and a basic guitar track first. I only did it piece by piece one, starting with the drums. We only did it that way because we were not a band, and had no parts figured out. The sing/songwriter wrote the songs and did rough demos. We all came with are own parts based on what was already laid down.

My group has to record one at a time (don't have studio) and we actually do Rhythm Guitar/ Lead Vocals (to a click track or the drum track depending) first.... once she's done the guitarist moves in and does his......then it's my turn. I like it this way because I cue off the singer and guitarists so I don't get lost (some of our songs you take away the vocals and you're lost....and if I'm concentrating on the click track I'm not singing the vocals in my head). Then once all thats done they go back in and add any harmony parts or little guitar effects or whatnot. We all tune up before recording and are plugged directly into the board, so intonation hasn't been an issue.

If you're a group that's used to playing live recording to a click track is a bit tricky.... as musicians we tend to hold out certain parts or speed up certain parts for effect, and after working together a while you do it together without even realizing it. Whole different world with a click track!
