I have to agree about Deftones, there are so good but you never hear about them doing anything big.

Opeth were (are? they still around?) fantastic musicians and had several huge albums...but I don't think they are filling stadiums.

Filling stadiums outside of the US I think the idea of "making it" is different depending upon what music you are in. Like to me post-metal/avant garde prog bands who can make a decent living playing that kind of music have made it. Like being able to afford a house/car/being endorsed.

Pop bands would probably only feel like they made it if they sold out stadiums. Does that make sense?

And yes Opeth are still around! Heritage came out last year and rules!

you think the Edge is good, and yet you dismiss Jack White?

frankly, i don't know how good the Edge is, because i have never heard him cut loose and play, but if his efforts with U2 are any indication, i'm sorry, i would rather hear Jack White all night. U2 is bland and boring...if it weren't for the fact that the media loves them because of all Bono's "Social Work" etc, they would long ago have been resigned to the scrapheap of history.

in all honesty, RHCP amazes me that they got so huge. those early recordings are so not-mainstream. dude cant sing in tune. like he just cant... and thats fine with me. but i'm he's a full blow popstar these days..

i disagree with most of the things i've read in this thread. having met and heard "famous" or relatively popular groups jam, rehearse, and record, it's changed my judgement on pop bands and their skill. nickelback made it because they play accessible pop music, and fairly tight. you may insist that they blow. but try and get your group to play together as well as (i am assuming) they do. thats what separates pop groups, really.

full disclosure- i honestly think nickelback is the worst music i've ever heard aside from kenny G. not into them or defending them. just not surprised they're popular.

Not at all. I mentioned Zep because I saw them, first hand, on a number of occasions (yes, that makes me old) and I was NOT impressed. Sorry, but I am not one of those guys who lives by reputation. I have always loved Zep, but "live" didn't do it for me.

Hell, I saw Gentle Giant 2 or 3 times during the same time period and they (literally) blew me away with their talent. Same thing with Steppenwolf, 3 Dog Night and the Turtles. Unfortunately, none of those groups hold the "reputation" that Zep does........

I saw the Who on a number of occasions as well. I'll take their live show any day and 3 times on Sunday.

Just out of curiosity - what turned you off with Zep's live show? I would think their dynamics would be funny just because of their catalog.

Well, I saw them three times. The first, I truly believe that they were higher than kites. Seriously.....I mean most everyone there was.....the PA sucked (MOST PAs sucked back then..) and they just didn't seem to be "into it". Don't get me wrong, the crowd loved them, but from a musician standpoint, I heard Waaayyyy too many bad notes, bad timing and sharp notes..

The second time I saw them, they ROCKED! Absolutely stunning show. No complaints there.

The third time I saw them, they seemed to be disinterested and (probably) fighting like cats and dogs. They weren't interested in playing and they didn't give a damn who knew it. My personal opinion was that "super stardom" had taken over and they couldn't be bothered. I saw a Uriah Heep concert a couple of days AFTER the Zep show and the difference was night and day......

well, that depresses me...

i had tickets to see Uriah Heep in Athens, GA when i was a senior in high school. when I got there, they announced that the show was cancelled, and they never came back...broke up a short time after.
