Bands That Your Amazed That Made It.

There is 2 bands out today that I saw live several years back that amoung their circles seem to be gaining popularity. Even headlining shows now. But when I saw them I was less than impressed.

Have you experienced the same thing???

Here are the 2 I saw.

1. Muse- Saw them during the RHCP Californication era. They opened for RHCP and Foo Fighters. We got into the city early and decided to stop at a local music store and pick up a copy of their cd. We wasnt impressed at all, but hoped for a better show. Got into our seats and they came out and we honestly beleived that we could of walked up on stage and stole their thunder. There wasnt a single song or anything that you hadnt heard a trillion times by your local garage bands, but these guys seemed worse than those garage bands. Last few years I read about them doing all this stuff and having these big records but still cant wrap my head around them.

2. Mastrodon-Saw them a few years back at one of the Jagermeister Tours opening for Killswitch Engage and Slayer. I was so unimpressed and felt they was tryin to do nothing but show boat by playing their guitars behind there heads and backs. That I went to the little mini bar out in the lobby and got a seat at the bar. See these guys mentioned alot but from what I saw and heard I thought for sure they'd be gone and would of been nothing more than a one and done band.

Five Finger Death Punch....I simply do NOT understand how these clowns achieved ANY sort of success and do not know what other people see in them or why anybody would care. They are totally overrated (IMHO) and what they are doing I have heard done MUCH better many times over. All that being said I do dig Mastodon ;) Different strokes I guess :D

Hi.

His Infernal Majesty, later H.I.M. for short.

I used to do monitors for them occasionally back in the mid 90's, and they were less than impressive. People gradually begun to like 'em though and the rest -as they say- is history.

The total opposite, if I may derail the topic a little, was Apocalyptica.
I had never, nor have I ever since seen, ANYBODY to go from virtual 0 to virtual 100 that fast. Seeing the crowd reaction and witnessing the whole thing from the stage was almost a religious experience, for a sound person anyway ;). No-one that night doubted that they'll make it. And make it BIG. As they did.
Later they IMO blew it some though, with drums and all.

Regards
Sam

Muse? Really? Muse? You may not like them, but it's a bit hard to deny their talent. Watch a few of their festival shows on Palladia. They put on a show and probably have a long career ahead of them.

That was their Showbiz era which, admittedly, wasn't their best work. I can agree with the 'garage band sound' the OP mentioned because that is exactly what they sounded like at the time. However, they matured substantially between then and their second album. I don't think anyone can listen to their second album and not say, "these guys got something cooking."

Godsmack. I still don't get it. Lowest Common Denominator riffs, minimal technical ability, which is cool if your songs are great, but they weren't. Voodoo has got to be the most boring song to ever be played on the radio. And Sully... well, I think my best friend said it best- "It sounds like he was making the melodies up as he went"

To be fair, i don't think they're a terrible band, or even bad. They're just so damn MEDIOCRE.

Bands That Your Amazed That Made It...hmmm...I would have to say a great majority (not all so don't get so defensive right away) of the bands now-a-days and from the last five years, especially in the pop, rap, metal and screamo influenced/styles of music. :hiding:

I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in '91 when they were touring in support of Blood Sugar Sex Magic. They had two opening bands that I had never heard of - Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. I thought they both sucked. Shows what I know! To be fair, Pearl Jam didn't really suck - I just found them kind of boring, and thought the lead singer was a little over-dramatic and self-important (turns out I was right about that). The Pumpkins truly sucked - just a wall of blaring guitar noise with Billy's horrible nasal shrieking on top. Siamese Dream was 2 years away, and the band was in a very early stage of development. Based on what I saw at that show, I am amazed the Pumpkins went on to have huge success.

Killswitch Engage and Slayer. IDGI.

And why would anyone be surprised that Nickelback succeeded? Kroger set out to compose top of the chart hits by the scientific method. You can't argue with science. That **** got us to the Moon, atom smashers, solid state electronics and all kinds of cool stuff (still waiting for my flying car, tho).
