Bands That Your Amazed That Made It.

I have no idea how bands like Nickelback, Coldplay, and many other "radio rock" bands made it.

I wonder what the heck people like about the recent rash of over-produced radio bands with high pitched vocals of ambiguous gender.

I thought much the same thing about the look-alike sound-alike hair bands and New Wave stuff of the 80's.

Above (or below) all those, though, there is Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. What. The. Eff. How anyone can possibly like those nasal, breathy, whiny, over-acted vocals, I have no idea. I will give Gwen credit for good business sense, though: she should be rolling in royalties for her many backups on others' work (like Moby's "South Side", to name one radio hit).

I'm just gonna say it: No Doubt's success was largely due to Gwen Stefani being easy on the eyes. Do you think they would've had any success at all if they sounded exactly the same but Gwen looked like Kathy Griffin?

You can go ahead and thank me for that mental image.

I am a fan, but still amazed at how big The National are these days. On the one hand, I am happy for the success they are having. On the other had, my days of seeing them with thirty other people for $7 have been over for quite some time now.

Also, it would depend on how you define 'making it' but I was shocked, years ago, when someone decided to have The Jesus Lizard open up for Bush. I was in MA at the time, and the show was at Great Woods/Tweeter Center. I didn't go because I didn't like Bush - and also, I just couldn't picture David How trying to interact with an audience that large.

OK, not just bands here but also solo artists;

Nickleback
2 pac (and every other rapper for that matter)
Justin Bieber
Lady gaga
Hoobastank (they sure stank!!)
Simple plan
Blink 182
Michael Jackson (not so much his rise, but more his stay at the top)
Dubstep
Did I mention every rapper there is??

Marylin Manson

I remember being at a local watering hole in Davie,FL with my guitar player watching MM and the Spooky Kids and thinking these guys suck I bet they will be famous in no time.

About two years later I saw them on MTV with their version of sweet dreams and I thought god I hate it when I'm right :D.

you really don't know what you're talking about... muse is one of the best live bands in the last 5 years! (and in fact, wolstenhome inspired a whole generation of young bass players...)

I think you said it there yourself. When you said "best live bands in the last 5 years". When I saw them it was early 2000-2001. And with what others have said about them in this thread, it sounds like they have improved. But at that time they left a negative mark for me personally.

Its hard to see a band you like listed on a thread like this. Heck one guy mentioned Nirvana and I have a portrait of Kurt on my shoulder blade. But, I accept the fact that not everyone likes the same thing and elected not to even attempt to defend them against him. This thread is for what our first reactions are not who's great and who sucks.

Every time I tune in to a Palladia channel concert lately and watch the bands I have to ask myself how the heck those bands made it...not that most of them actually have 'made it', but at least they made it to the point of being booked on that stage. But then I watch those UK attendees singing along with the songs and I guess those bands are popular over there, even though I've never heard of most of them. And the suck factor is pretty high with some of them.

All of the above mentioned!

Have to especially ditto the Dave Matthews band, the ONLY reason he got anywhere was the high-caliber musicians he surrounded himself with, because by himself, he's a VERY mediocre singer, guitarist and songwriter.

In the 80's there was Thelonious Monster. OMG, these guys just COULD NOT PLAY AT ALL!!!! Once saw them as an opening act for Red Hot Chili Peppers and What Is This (any L.A. folks remember them?). Thelonious Monster were THE MOST INCOMPETENT people I ever saw who just should not have been allowed to own instruments. What really appalled me was the got to put out albums and have some success. I was so thankful when they finally packed it in. WORST band I ever saw in my life.

And I add, ANY rapper, period and I DESPISE death. speed and black metal, ALL GARBAGE. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
