Bands That Your Amazed That Made It.

When, exactly, did Oingo Boingo "make it?" Nothing at all against them, but I must have been passed out during their 15 minutes of fame.
OB frontman Danny Elfman, on the other hand, has most certainly made it as a composer.
(I could watch "Gong Show" clips all the doo-dah day. Awesome program.)
Heyyyyy, easy there, friend. Didn't mean to dis OB. Those great stations' signals didn't reach us mouth-breathin', knuckle-draggin' easterners before the Internet.
I was surprised to learn that Boingo had 3 top 40 hits, and none of them were "Weird Science" or "Dead Man's Party."
I don't think you can really be surprised at any of them, all acts mentioned here are either really technically skilled musicians, or are spectacle carnival shows build up by the record industry and MTV.
There's a local metal band around here that's been on the rise for the last year or so... when I was in a metal band a couple years ago, they were opening for us at free gigs in basements and pizza shops. I was never into their music, kinda watered down Killswitch style, but they have a gimmick worth a million dollars: they dress and act like medieval warriors on stage, throw foam swords and inflatable 20-sided die into their mosh pits, and film LARP-inspired music videos. They did the legwork to get their name out there and get recognized, have released a complete album and are on a pretty expansive east coast tour. They are definitely the most up-and-coming band coming out of Pittsburgh, and yet if they dressed in plain clothes and did not include the skits and showmanship in their shows and did not put the work into expanding their brand, they'd probably still be opening for the likes of us in pizza shops

She's in love with him lol! I didn't know who he was till she told me he's from Requiem for a Dream (which I liked). That dude is smart I'll give him that, girls love him and he's rich

He's also in Fight Club, believe in or not. I gotta admit, the guy is doing something right if he's both a fairly success actor and musician.
Honestly, I like a lot of the bands that are mentioned here....
With that being said, everyone likes something different. I guess I'm in no position to criticize anyone else, it's not like I'm some sort of virtuoso.....and I give them all credit for having the drive, timing, and luck to hit it big.
But in the spirit of the original question.....these are some acts I just "don't get"......I won't say "they suck"....I just don't really understand what people see.....

And the radio stations around here are starting to push The Black Keys. Personally, not a fan. But to each his own.

Radiohead. They were naff when they started, you wouldn't have expected them to become what they did or have the success they have.
I wasn't around in those days, but weren't The Beatles pretty poor when they first started? Or is that just a misconception because Decca didn't sign them?

I went to project revolution a few years back, went to see less than jake not including them cause they were good and never really got too big, also enjoyed linkin park, quite a bit, but before both those bands, The used played a set, Remember those guys, sounded like audible excrement. Also Fall out boy, Pete Wentz is my main problem with that band, they have some catchy songs which I guess suit their purpose for whom they are selling to but wentz being called a Bassist, and being famous at that, is an insult to all of us.
Ke$ha is great! When you remove her from the mix! Seriously, the production of some of these pop star's Rhianna, Britney, Ke$ha are done by world class producers like Swedish House Mafia, Diplo, etc. The songs are great when you remove the singer!
The fledgling Beatles played hundreds of gruelling all-nighters in Hamburg's seediest clubs before they got a record contract. That regime turned them into the tightest rock'n'roll combo in the UK. If Decca rejected them it was because it was a staid company with no ears to the future.
