I dig Perry Farrell. The scream right before the lead in "Up The Beach" is bad ass.

Springsteen? Uh, no. I agree with that dude. I'd rather hear Journey and I hate Journey.

Bon Scott for sure.

Totally dug Garcia's voice.

Les Claypool

Kurt Cobain

Layne Staley

Trent Reznor

Marilyn Manson.


All sound good to me.

I don't mind Springsteen, up until his more cheesy 80's stuff.

I'm pretty down with most of the singers mentioned in this thread, my problem is with singers who whine or mumble or sing like drunken karaoke participants.

Amen to that. How I wish I could scream the way Geddy did in his 20s or carry a tune the way he does today.

My top pick would have to be from a band that I really love that gets ZERO love around these parts, The Black Keys. Dan Auerbach is a great singer IMO, the guy can sound different on every song. My second would be Jesse Hasek of 10 Years, another great band that people don't seem to like.

And big +1 to Queen.

I suppose everyone's got their own taste and that's OK, but I really cannot appreciate some people's opinion that Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell are bad singers. I mean, in this day and age when everything is tweaked and sounds uniformed, when you cannot tell a difference between 10 randomly chosen singers you can hear on the radio, when every girl singer is trying/succeeding to sound like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston (which I find extremely boring) and a great majority of male singers are just yelling and barking I yearn for singers whom I can actually recognize by the difference from the rest by the color of their voice in two seconds, and who, actually, really know how to deliver a song that will stand out. I think those two really can.
Same goes for Tom Waits. Many people don't like his singing, but I find it very special and intriguing, if not really beautiful.

Gonna date myself here, but Johnny Rotten/Lydon from the Sex Pistols. I'll grant you that technically he's a TERRIBLE vocalist in a pure sense, but when he performs his vocals just cut through and spearhead the song.

Beyond the Sex Pistols, check him out with PIL (aka Public Image Ltd.), or the song "The Animal Speaks" by Golden Palominos, or the song "World Destruction" by Time Zone with Afrika Bambaataa.

HR from Bad Brains. The vocalist of my band in the 90's and I used to get in major fights over my Bad Brains tape (Banned in DC, The ROIR tape!). Mostly when we were on tour. But a few times just driving around town too. Ahhh band fights....don't miss that part of being in my 20's.

Oh and what about King Diamond, both solo and with Mercyful Fate?! That falsetto almost made me not get into Mercyful Fate!

about Springsteen, I am generally ambivalent about him, but that Christmass song, "santa claus is coming to town"? God I hate his vibrato on the chorus. You can drive a truck through it its so wide.

About Vedder et al. One of my bestest buddies is convinced that all of the "Grunge" singers except Cobain were aping James Hetfield's delivery. Because of this she hates Metallica to the ends of the earth. I can see her point, but I think they are actually all doing a very stoned CCR impersonation.
Tell me you can't imagine Eddie Vedder singing "Born on the Bayou".

I always thought he had really good voice too, and he certainly had a unique style.
