Double Bass Barcus Berry

What does everybody think of the clamp-style Barcus Berry?
I saw one on ebay, new for $60 plus shipping.

I'm looking for cheap magnetic too

Not bad, but I found the response was not even across the strings.
You get more of the bottom strings.
For the price, it's a good deal IMHO.
(but I wouldn't pay full retail for it!)

I've been using it for two years or so and it is fantastic. If you put it on bass side and roll off the lows, it is pretty even. It also give very little interference with the acoustic sound - I can use it with a volume pedal and have the amp off most of the time and the sound is great!

Do you use it with the matching Barcus Berry preamp? I got the impression that it does not work so well without this component.

Straight into a GK and it is fine. The arco sound is great. One thing we have to remember is trying older pick ups through contemporary amps. My GK is 20 years old now, but it would sound even better through an AI or Walter Woods. The best thing about it is that comes of the bass easily!
