Basic Recording Gear

Hi Guys,

Just wanted some help my band need to do some recordings and Im looking to get some gear in to allow me to do this. I know that i am going to have to pay but what are the options can you help?

There are six of us

Vocals, Guitar x2, Keyboard, Bass, Drums.

What can I look at getting?

Depends on the quality you want and how much you want to spend. You can go anywhere from a zoom H2 or H4 which is "everything you need" for a couple hundred bucks, to needing a bunch of mics, preamps, recording interface, computer, and software, which can run up to several thousands of dollars quite easily.

If you don't have much to spend, the H2/H4 are a lot of bang for the buck.

Start by narrowing down your mission:

Multitrack recording of all instruments live? Then you need enough inputs to account for each source. That puts you into an 8-input interface to start with. You will need a computer/software setup to do the actual recording. You could also go with a standalone workstation. it depends on what you want to spend a lot of time dealing with. Either will take a lot of work to get good results.

If you just want to make stereo recordings of the band playing live you can get a good stereo recorder for under $400 USD and be on your way.
