Have a band (if possible), a soloist, and some unfamiliar changes/tunes, maybe in a few different styles. See who can play the best "bass", functioning as a traditional bass player within the ensemble/genre on the fly. Mark breakdown: 50% judges, 50% band/soloist.

Lots of immature responses on this thread. The way I see it, it will be a tie. Your mom votes for you his mom votes for him. Arguing with a guitard never leads to anything constructive. If it has to happen, the contest should be done with a band and only the drummer gets to vote.

Good luck on that one dude

YMMV

it's a BASS-OFF!

hey hey sir! i didn't challenge him to a bass off. I challenged him to a bass battle. So i'm gonna do this similar to a guitar battle. AND THAT'S SO ******* TRUE THAT GUITARDS ONLY WANT TO DO COVERS!!!!!!! very few like improv/jam stuff. I wont make the boy do a fretless or double bass XD though id win hands down at that one. I think it would be really cool if he got good at the bass :D but i will DEFINITELY record it and put it on youtube.

What the gu1tard can do is play simple, well known songs with a pick with some lousy sound. He might try to shred, but that's it. He might be a better "performer", though.

You can play the same song but with a better sound, slap-shred, but also improv, play fretless and read.

You've got no way of losing. Have him set the rules, that will bring him down even more.

Ahhh... to be a kid again :D

I would suggest an improv to a drum beat on the day taking turns. Agree on a key or a progression and both have to take turns after 30 seconds of improv. The challenge is that the next section will have to follow the first so that the music flows. So if you start of with a kick ass funk slap section for 30 seconds he would have to follow it, and if he's learnt bass then it shouldnt be a problem for him. He doesent have to follow through with slapping but it has to flow. This tests:

Music theory
Improv
Sense of groove and ear
Technique
Timing.

Better still, while the other person is soloing the other maintains a steady groove underneath then you switch after 30 secs
