If we could see what the guys in ths those band playes: Slipknot - Ibanez ATK, Avenged Sevenfold - Stingray, Pantera - Used a lot of stuff, but also: Stingray.

I don't completely disagree with your G&L suggestion... because I never had the chance to play one. (but I assume they are fine basses.
But you hit something bringing up the ATK.
If you can do with a 4 or 5-string 34" scale... then nothing beats an Ibanez ATK when it comes to price and a good bass for metal.
I might even say it's a worthy alternative for a Stingray.
There have been many different basses used for metal, the Fender Jazz, Precision, Rickenbacker 4001, Aria, Stingray, Ibanez, etc. As was stated before by numerous other people on here, the best bass would be the one you feel most comfortable with.
Don't mean to hijack.. But I find this bass guitar VERY intriguing.. What is it??
I'm going to say it again. Find a bass that feels good and you like the sound of, then start looking at amplifiers. Marshalls are the mainstay of metal, but again, find out what the guys your listening to are playing through.

I personally like the looks of an ASAT.
Have not have a chance to play it, but I bet it sounds great and more than good enough for me to play metal on.
But uhm... I'd buy a Roscoe again before I buy a G&L.

Don't get an Ibanez. Mine is ****.

Forget getting a new bass, and instead get a new amp. a Traynor YBA200.. it has tubes... and it's not waaay too expensive... pretty much around midrange 4 string price actually. and with a full tube amp... any bass can metal (; This is the most pertinent difference between a metal gig and any othe gig i go to.. the metal bands are running around with Orange, traynor marshall and stuff like that... the basses are pretty much the same as other places
