Bass braking me in...J24

Hey guys, I wanted to share some of my experiences over the last six months concerning my return to the bass world. First off, I'm having a great time learning from a proper teacher. Second, G.A.S. is contagious, but I think I have it under control now :D. Third, I discovered that after a good period of time (on and off) a bass can break me in.

When I first bought my J24, I had a strong like, but not full love of it. The longer neck to a bit of getting used to. It always gave me fret buzz and felt very stiff overall. At one point I traded it back, but after an overnight debate with myself. I went and got it back, and am really glad I did. Before I took it home, I let my bass guy do a proper set up. After a week I got the call and picked up my J24. The strings had been changed to a lighter gauge, neck properly straightened, and action was lowered. Also, leaving it at a constant temperature helped settle it in (like butta' :p).

My main everyday bass is a Classic 60's Jazz which has settled in wonderfully. The action and tone are really good. Lately, I've been reaching for the J24 and have noticed that it doesn't feel as stiff as it once did before. It feels very comfortable and I have warmed up to it much more (if that makes any sense). I know from reading around the TB forum, the J24 is one of those touch and go, love or hate kind of basses. Given time (in my case), it has become a shining star in it's own right. Not an easy thing to do with some of the other basses in my stable (check sig).

Has anyone else have his happen?

PS- I got over the ding, for those who remember

That's pretty. :)

My Jazz 24 was my first new bass in 15 years, and I immediately took to it. It was actually the first guitar I didn't have to grow into. We meshed right out of the box.

But it eventually became a series of headaches that killed the joy. Now, after various tweaking, I do find I'm having to grow back into it and find it's virtues. I have too much into it to give up on it, now. :hmm:

I generally rotate between my basses anyway, so I'm always dusting off a neglected one and saying "Oh yeah...that's why I keep this thing around..." The J24 is the one that always comes back with superior playability and tone.
