So I was at a pub a few weeks back and chatting to a couple of girls and somehow the conversation got onto music and basses and stuff like that, so I mentioned that I play the bass guitar and one of the girls just said, "oh cool, do you play a Jazz or Precision?" I simply said that I play a Warwick (that's my main bass but I also have an Ibanez) and she simply scoffed and said "nah, I don't like Warwicks." I mean sure, fenders are nice basses (they don't do anything for me personally) but there's a lot of other great bass companies out there, has anyone else experienced similar situations? To think that I play bass so a precision or jazz must be the only types i play kinda annoys me haha.

bass brand ignorance

I've been thinking about a new bass for a few years now and as I don't own anything by Fender was sort of settled on buying a Jazz bass (everyone has to have one right?). But when I went into stores and started playing both the Jazz and the P basses I didn't think either of them felt or played as nice as my fretless stingray. I'm now on the market for another stingray which (for me at least) feels like so much better an instrument (and yes I know it was part designed by Leo Fender - by the time he got to musicman he knew what he was doing!).

Most musicians, even guitarists, I ever played with wouldn't know a J from a P, and rarely ever heard of Warwick. I can't imagine some random girls knowing more about bass than it produces low notes!

Anyway, you certainly shouldn't have gotten annoyed, but instead taken her interest in the instrument as an opportunity to ask her out!

The correct answer was: "I've got a Warwick, but I'm planning on getting a Precision soon."
I mean, you had a situation where the girls stuck around even after saying you're a bass player (not to mention the fact that they actually knew a bass was different than a guitar).

Two lessons learned here: 1) to each his own. I had the same feeling you guys had but opposite. I grab a Jazz and it instantly becomes part of me where a Ray34 feels like someone dropped a plank in my hands. 2) any chick who asks if your bass if your bass is either one model or another (and especially disses a Warwick) is just looking for free drinks because she doesn't know nuthin'!
I've never experienced it personally...but I only play Fenders really so, given that they're pretty much the best-known brand in the world of music - especially for bass...
haha it turns out she had a boyfriend, and i was more interested in her friend

Sounds to me like she only heard of Jazzes and Precisions and was just talking out of her @$$... I'm sure she had no idea what a Warwick even was.

That is impressive! I play in 2 bands and the other members only know my instruments as 'the white one' or 'the fancy one' or 'the orange one'. Of course, I also own no Fenders, so the name isn't written out in big letters on the headstock to aid the ignorant...
So her pea brain could only remember the two most common basses in existence? Meh, sounds typical. I'm kinda surprised she actually remembered that.

You are almost certain to run into people like this, however most of the time I just brush off what they say when it comes to dissing my gear that I love to use and play. Good rule of thumb is to play and use what YOU want, forget what others say about it. You are the one that is playing and using, not them. With these girls it could be that in the music they know or like or have seen live a good majority of basses they see being used may be a P or a J so that is basically all they know and seem to trust is a great bass. I play Fender P's exclusively, however will agree there is a lot of other nice basses out there.
