Bass Cabinet Question

Hey Guys,

Here is what I have started. Purchased an empty carvin LSX 1503 cabinet (no crossover) and the 4 ohm 400w 15" speaker that went with it. Going to use this for a bass cabinet. I think I'm going to seal the hole of the 1" tweeter and put a 6" speaker in the other hole(originally had 6" speaker). So, it will have a 15" speaker and a 6" speaker. Going to run amp/preamp through it for bass guitar. Here is my question.

I want to bridge a stereo amp to probably put out 450-550 watts @ 4 ohms. I will use a 2 way x-over. If both speakers are 4 ohm will the load be 4 ohms? If not, what do I need to do to get this cabinet to 4 ohms?

Also, if the 15" speaker handles 400watts and the 6" handles 30 watts, is the cabinet 430 watts?

Lastly, if I can put an 8" speaker or 10" speaker instead of 6" speaker (have not seen cabinet, bought it on ebay)..........should I??

To the best of my knowledge, all LS1503s used 8 Ohm drivers.

You'd have to do some pretty creative surgery on the baffle to fit an 8" on there. 10" definitely won't fit.

Thanks for the info....I think your right. I just need to figure out if I run it with 4 ohm speakers will it be a 4 ohm cab.

1. use 8 ohm drivers, not 4. 4's are harder to get and not avilable in all models anyway.

2. 400w. you go by what the woofer can handle.

BTW, I'd suggest to the OP that he just use another 6.5" mid/high driver, with a 2-way crossover at 500Hz or so.

The issue is I have a 4 ohm woofer, so its already purchased. Need to know if I buy a 4 ohm or 8 ohm for 6" speaker, will cabinet be 4 ohms. Basically, with the 15" 4 ohm speaker I have, what ohm does the other speaker need to be to keep it 4 ohms.

If you use a REAL crossover (not a highpass or lowpass filter), and use a 4 ohm mid driver, the cab will be 4 ohms.

It does not combine the impedances of the 2 speakers because it is seperated the load based upon frequency.

Your problem is going to be finding the right 2 way / 4 ohm crossover. I do not think that Carvin has them for those cabs because they are all 8 ohm cabs.

You are correct........talked to Carvin today and they said using a crossover it would recognize 4 ohms. I was thinking that a highpass/lowpass filter was a real crossover.......might need to rethink my design.........

Whoops! I guess I should read the question that is being asked before I answer. Well, in my defence my answer would be correct nine times out of ten with the most common wiring question asked here
