Currently I rely on my Zoom MS60B or B3 for modulation duties on my boards and have a TC 3rd Dimension as well for shimmer.

Have you tried to set The Vibe patch as a chorus ?

Some settings sound very good on bass and I'm not hearing low-end loss. I'm assuming the LFO knob dictates how much modulation is affecting the lower freqs ?

I like vibrato and tremolo on guitar & synth ~ but not so much on bass.

I'm not that technical. I thought it sounded best at noon. Here is what the manual says:

SHAPE knob: this knob affects the LFO (low-frequency-oscillator) shape of the modulation. With the knob at center, you have a symmetric sine wave, the most standard sounding effect. As you turn the knob one direction or the other, the LFO shape is warped to be less symmetric the further you turn the knob.

Listed all the chorus pedals mentionned in this thread (by me or others) with a bass demo when available. I gave those 2 a listen for the 1st time, they sound very good on bass, both were bit of a surprise to me.

I'm ordering this one for poops and giggles... $28 for a chorus with a blend control? I'm sure it won't be great, but I don't use chorus very much, and I can always return it if it's too terrible.

I've got the Aguilar Chorusaurus and I have mixed feelings about it. It's a high quality pedal that has a lot of good tones, but I wish it had more width and high-end sparkle in mono. It has some real movement and width in stereo, but my pedal board is just not built to do that neatly.

I think it may be that I just prefer the 80s style choruses, that split the signal into 3 voicings, so I recognize it might be a taste mismatch on my end.

Curious what you mean by 3 voicings? Are you talking about stereo choruses that have two channels of detune alongside the clean channel? I definitely dig the Eventide Harmonizer style of stereo detune like that, but without pitch LFO like a typical chorus

Disclaimer: I could be misunderstanding. However, as far as I know the classic 70s-style chorus effects have two signals: the original and one signal that is modulated and slightly delayed. 80s-style choruses often have three: the original signal and then two modulated signals. To my ears the 80s-style choruses sound more open and clear. This video, of the Jackson New Wave chorus, has good examples of the different styles of chorus. If the price was lower I'd probably get this pedal for bass:

I'd guess the "70s" mode in that Jackson pedal is referring to the Roland Jazz Chorus (or Boss CE-1, which was basically that amp's chorus put into a pedal form), which had an LFO modulated signal on one side and your clean signal on the other side. The "80s" mode might be referring to the Roland/Boss Dimension C/D effects, which used separate analog delays per output that were intentionally out of phase with each-other (increased phase-cancellation is part of the reason that mode sounds thinner/more-focused frequency-wise but also creates a wider sounding stereo field).

In both cases you gain alot running them in stereo (how that Jackson demo is recorded), which is indeed impractical for most bassists in a live environment. Do you have a reference tone that can show what you are searching from from a strictly mono chorus on bass?

Closest to the tone I'd want is the Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus. Chorus into a very subtle digital delay also gets there. If Tech 21 re-released their chorus in a smaller footprint I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat.

However, you're right that a stereo set-up is probably the only way to get that perfect chorus tone. That's just an expensive overhaul of my set-up and I'm hesitant to go there.

Yeah I’m a big fan of the Tech 21 for it’s Detune options, but using something like an Eventide Harmonizer plugin with slightly detuned voices in stereo makes the Tech 21 sound completely one-dimensional! That said, for bass use I don’t necessarily find 3-dimensional to always be a positive thing in a mix. It tends to take up lot of sonic space and can sound removed from the bass drum, which is generally a more centered element in a mix alongside the bass. In a live environment I usually set my Tech 21 so that it sounds really good when I’m playing alone, then dial it back just a bit and it usually fits nicely in the mix without drawing too much attention to itself or losing my adhesion to the bass drum- just adds some “sparkle” as you say. The Multi-voice detune on the Tech 21 can definitely get phasey if you aren’t subtle with it too (something the stereo field helps with). It really depends on what you are going for though!

No! I have been doing the same quite a bit lately, depending on the context. When dialed in subtly it can add a lot of depth without taking anything away

Amen, to that. Pic shows how I run it.

When you set it up, just right, it adds a lot of heft, and depth, which contributes to the overall sound.

I have even been known to run an "Always On," with the Wampler Ethereal Delay/Reverb, and it is a thick, fat, pleasing sound. It runs in conjunction with a GK Legacy 800 head, and GK CX410 & CX210 cabs, and the HPF tunes out the unwanted mud.

I'm happy this pedal still gets the attention around here, with all that's coming out. Maybe I'll get one again one day. Got a few on my list before I get to it, but if a deal comes along, who knows...
