Bass Confessional

I've altered custom built basses.

I don't think everything Jaco played was all that great.

I've listened to and played to the Grand Funk Red album and Uriah Heep's Demon's and Wizards more times than should be acceptable for a grown man.

I think Victor Wooton has a lousy tone.

I've ghosted notes when I forgot the changes and acted like nothing was wrong.

I love playing way up high on the neck really loudly.

* I don't slap very well at all
* I own far more guitars than I do basses, and I'm not technically a guitard
* I spent $oodles recently on a custom acoustic guitar - now I'm too poor to buy needed bass gear
* I "rotate" my strings: New on Jazz, old from Jazz to ABG, older from ABG to fretless.
* I play with a pick a lot
* I use guitar effects a lot for bass
* I've never owned a Fender (Love Squier guitars, though)

OK, here goes...

1. I have sanded the finish off of several bass necks, including my 1978 Precision & my 2005 G&L L2500.
2. I carved my name into the control cavity covers of my 2006 Pedulla Thunderbass & also my 2005 G&L L2500 (on the inside).
3. I defretted a Spector Q5 with a butter knife & a pair of needle nose pliers while unemployed and watching daytime TV.
4. I refretted the same Spector Q5 with little strips of mahogany from the hobby store, and sanded them down with a Dremel tool. (I atoned for this iniquity by ordering another fretted neck from Spector). (I got both of these steps (de-fretting and re-fretting) done in a single day!)
5. While the fretted neck was on the bass, I killed a garter snake that snuck into the house with the un-fretted neck.
6. I lent out my upright bass once.
7. I have EMGs in my Precision.

Oh boy...
My first bass was my girlfriend's dad's that I used every once in a while until I could buy my own.
1+ Years later, I purchased my first bass (Last Friday, the 3rd).
I don't know any of the "classic" bass players.
I only know who Jaco Pastorius is cuz I had to do a report on him for my jazz class.
I play with a pick, but it doesn't feel right.
I play with my fingers, but it isn't that great.
I play slap, but I'm pretty bad.
I play chords often.
Worse, I play power chords often-er.
I don't tune much, cuz I don't have a tuner.
I hammer on.
I don't know my scales or notes on the fretboard (working on it!).
I slide on a fretted bass.
I have bumped my bass on the wall about 4 times since I bought it.
I bought the floor model, but didn't buy a strap or case at the time (moron).
I use harmonics.
I used to play guitar.
Before that, saxophone.
I also played bass drum in marching band.
But I swear that I'M SURE bass is my instrument.

After a gig a very sizzling blond said to me: "Your guitar is soooo much longer than the other guys guitars. Can I touch it"? Yeah, maybe she didn't know the difference between a bass and guitar, but I confess that this tops my list of cool things that I've been told as a bass player.

  • I use a pick
  • I play chords to comp when playing with other bassists
  • I know only one Jamerson line (Ain't no Mountain High Enough)
  • I can't slap well
  • I play artificial harmonics
  • I scoop the mids for fun at times while playing by myself
  • I use my thumb when not slapping
  • I own not 1 album with Jamerson on it
  • I own not one Larry Graham album
  • I like walking on uprights more than electrics

-I didn't know what "scooping the EQ" meant until about 5 minutes ago.
-I have flats on my USA Fender P-Deluxe.
-I play slap style on the flats that are on my USA Fender P-Deluxe.
-I also change strings every few weeks and I'm pretty sure it's just to upset my wife because they definitely don't need changed.
I'm a string whore. I have 9 sets of strings in the mail to me right now including Elixirs, DR Black Beauties, GHS Coated Boomers, D'addario half rounds, Fender 8250's, Rotosound 45's and 3 sets of Dunlops.
I don't know whether to :bassist: or :hiding:

- I prefer cheap basses over expensive ones and have never paid more then £200 for one.
- i love the overdrive pedal too much.
- i am the worst at practising.
- i spend too much time coming up with silly electronic gizmos to make cool sounds rather then actually learning to play properlly.
- I have an day-glo pink cable :bawl:
- the first song i learnt was smoke on the water (yes i know :rollno: )

-Every since my daughter was born 3 1/2 years ago, I rarely practice, but I still play in a band-my bass stays in it's case in between gigs.
-One of the last gigs I played, I used my AEB, it had dust all over it.
-I just started a hiatus from playing gigs because we are expecting twin daughters coming any day now. Not being able to play makes me want to play more- hence more time on Talkbass
-I have watched the Juan Nelson bass solo from the Ben Harper DVD on Youtube probably 50 times in the last 6 weeks.

Alas, I have sinned as well:
I used to use a pick exclusively
I am not particularly fond of Fender basses
I do not covet the almighty SVT (or 8X10)
I have more effects pedals than strings on any one bass
I own almost as many guitars as basses
Once upon a time I thought Freebird sounded cool
I don't like Jazz
I think coffee table basses should have actually become coffee tables
I do not like relicing or mojo

Forgive me, for I know the error of my ways yet continue upon the unrighteous path :bawl:
