Bass Confessional

Where to start...

I put on a bridge cover to make my bass look like older ones, and in rage because I wanted to adjust my action, ripped it off my bass, leaving two massive screwholes in the body. And oh yeah, it's a 1984 SQ series Fender.

I hang my bass around my groin.

I have an affection for double stops.

I have enjoyed the sound of scooped mids before.

I smack my drummers cymbals all the time at the end of songs.

I slap on flats (Dead ones at that).

I have a Fender fetish. And it's insatiable.

Mike Dirnt is one of my favorite bassists.

There's a massive chip in the paint on the back of my Precision and flathead screwdriver shaped gouge. Let's not go into the details.

Two of my basses have EMG's.

Steve Harris and Billy Sheehan are two of the most uninteresting bassists I could ever conceive of.

Slap bassists (Graham, Wooten, Flea, Miller, etc.) make me wanna deep throat a 12 gauge if I listen for more than 5 minutes.

Another about my Precision... I had it refretted.

I always, and I mean ALWAYS, carry around a pouch with my bass full of 12 picks. 12 exactly. No more, no less.

I have no interest in playing with my thumb or with slapping or popping.

I like short scale a lot.

I love those mid-late sixties style, further up the neck grooves.

Fender basses bore me and are too heavy.

Fretted basses are now a chore and a bore to play. I find playing fretless bass easier (low action) and completely satisfying and avoid my fretted basses.

love bass, drums, piano jazz trios but hate the Bad Plus.

feel that Carol King's "Tapestry" is one of the best bass albums in the last 40 years.

Wonder why I listened to so much of that early 80s "new wave" where bass playing was essentially forbidden?-probably because my college girlfriends did.

Strangely I do this same thing. Not sure why, but always 12 black Tortex 1.14s, 2 in the PG and 10 in the case. And I seldom use them.

Oh, I guess there's another sin. I put a couple of picks in my PG to try and look cool, but when I play pick (rarely) I grab one out of the case.

And they are the same color as the bass, so you can't see them to make me "look cool" anyway.

Mine are hot pink Fender heavy picks. Pretty sure they're just as old as the bass they came with. Been extremely careful not to lose even one.

i've admitted to my sins many times, but here they are:

i use sansamps with my ampeg tube amps

i buy and play cheap basses but i'd love an alleva coppolo or cs fender

i reuse strings way longer than i should, and when they get fret dents, i just string them up to where the fret dents line up with the frets

i never play naked

Some sins of mine...

- Person who got me into bassplaying was Sid Vicious.
- I'm pretty bad at slapping
- I play with pick 90% of time, but I learned to play with my fingers.
- I've always liked the looks of Fender Jazz, but haven't got the tone I like from it.
- I have never done Nirvana covers
- I love to play past the 12th fret.
- My first stringed instrument was seven string acoustic guitar that I played like a bass.

Forgive me oh gods of the low end for i have sinned copiously....

> I dont like Jaco, I tried to listen so many times....sorry.
> Im often complimented on my slap bass skills, little do they know i can only slap the E String
> I rarely restring.
> I have no idea the difference string brand/gauges make
> I cant read music, but i dont use tab
> I hate the tone on fender basses, and i have tried 4 of them
> Proper bassists use their fingers, regardless of tone (oh i love to finger)
> I can play with a pick really well
> I play slung low
> I have a £1300 stingray but prefer my Dean for comfort, sound and tone (occasionally)
> I dont like rush.
> Im left handed.

Okay, first post time:

-I play with medium picks. I have broken exactly 35 picks in the last two years, and have fashioned them into a string I plan on turning into a necklace/ornament later.
-Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes got me to play bass, and although I am 18 I detest most of current music. I am pretentious regarding current bass idols and I'm a huge fanboy of JPJ/Ent/Bruce.
-I use a Trace Elliot Compression pedal as a natural overdrive pedal and literally use it for every show I play. I refuse to plug into PA.
-I rarely use my index finger for plucking, I use my middle/ring/pinky instead. It's a rather weird style.
-I absolutely hate Ampeg amps
-I EQ with very little Treble and high mids, and look down on players who do.
-I always use different string setups. Currently I have Rotosound Swing 66 on my G string, GHS Bass Boomers on my A and D strings, and a Ernie Ball Power Slinky on my E.
-I play a MusicMan SUB and have no intention on graduating to a Stingray.
-Would someday like to play through a 1x20 cab.
-Have played two shows where I inevitably wound up naked. Got in trouble for one of them.
-Have worn a dress on stage.

I play more with a pick.
I play chords.
I play taps and harmonics.
I play above the seventh fret regularly.
I prefer Manring, Squire, and Chancelor to Jaco, Jamerson, and Miller.
I don't care for Fender.
If it ain't got at least 24 frets I don't want it.
Oh, and I hate the sound of flats.

Hey, you sound just like me, except I hardly ever play with a pick.
