Bass Confessional

Forgive me Leo for I have sinned...

- I can't play Brown eyed girl
- Can't and don't want to play mustang sally
- I have one bass that has had the same strings for four years, another one for two
- I rarely clean my basses
- I can't stand lines that accent 1 and the and of 2
- I regularly play my funk arrangement of Have You Met Miss Jones with my jazz combo
- I have a 76 effect module, I never use wah or distortion like most people...I use a delay/phaser combo.
- Despite the fact that Geddy Lee is one of my favorite bassists, I can't stand his tone.
- I strongly dislike the vast majority of Victor Wooten's catalog...same with marcus miller.
- I spent a large portion of my bass playing career thinking of pick players as inferior...then I heard Justin Chancellor
- I don't know any Jamerson lines
- I once smacked the head of my Fender Jazz on a hardwood floor during a gig because I was too "energetic" in my performance.
- I can't stand Bootsy.
- I have worked hard to become a fairly good guitarist (don't worry I consider myself a bassist)..and sometimes I gig with THAT instrument.
- I didn't play bass ALL SUMMER so I could play tuba in the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps....

that's a lot of hail leos...:hiding:

Ok I'll play

For the first year of playing bass I pronounced Jaco as Yacko because that's how my band teacher pronounced it

I enjoy playing with a pick

I've used a bass with a giant skull on it at jazz festivals

I played a John Entwistle style bass solo during a funk song with said skull bass at said jazz festival

I've used pliers to adjust my action

I've had the same set of swing bass 66s on my bass for over half a year

I never use the right size screw drivers for the screws on my bass

I haven't cleaned my bass since I put on said swing bass 66s

I started playing because of gene Simmons and still consider him to be a good bass player

I'm going to go to bass he'll aren't I?

I'll bite.

-I didn't start out as a bass player, I started out as a drummer...
-Tried to play a guitar a couple of times and dropped it all-together. I just don't like it.
-I have 5 pedals and all of them are Boss.
-I love Fender mostly due to the headstock shape.
-I play Squier Classic Vibe basses.
-I can't pop 'n' slap well.
-I cut up my hand punching my bass while playing, "Killing In The Name"
-I put chrome covers and flatwounds on all my basses.
-I will never buy a bass that doesn't have a pickguard/scratchplate.
-I don't like Ibanez basses for an unknown impulse. I might need a shrink to solve this...
-Basswood is my favorite bass wood (no pun intended)

Some of my bass sins...

- I originally started on guitar, and I still occasionally think about buying a guitar again.

- I can't slap worth a damn, and I dislike the "slap mystique" in general.

- I barely can read music. I learn mostly from tabs or by ear, and play from memory.

- My bass heroes are mostly rockers, not jazz players.

- I actually like Mike Dirnt and Gene Simmons.

- I play EB, but one of my biggest bass heroes is Lee Rocker.

- I admire guys like Dee Dee and Lemmy, who toss aside the technical stuff and drive through walls with nothing but a pick on the E-string. :bassist:

- I don't see the point in boutique basses.

- I also don't see the point in "relic", "road-worn" or whatever the latest euphemism is for "beat to hell" basses. I wish I could sell my "relic" car for twice the amount of a regular new car...

- Last car on the "relic" thought train: I think Jaco's bass was a hunk of junk.

- I once played a funked version of the guitar riff from Dave Matthews "What Would You Say" with my bass and an envelope filter.

And finally, what might be the biggest bass sin I have ever committed...

- I made up my own bass line to "Cantaloupe Island". On EB. :hiding:

- I have been playing since October.
- ...and I'm still using the factory strings.
- I rock a 15w amp.
- I have only once played a guitar.
- I have been known to try use a pick. A pickguard, not so much.
- I started on a fiver.
- My bass is an ESP. It has never been used for metal.

Is there forgiveness for a bass noob such as I? :hiding:

The Ten:
1.) I don't like Rush, Yes, or Level 42..at all.
2.) I didn't know there was a difference between MIM and MIA until I had played for 5 years.
3.) I can't read 1 note of music.
4.) I play lead guitar 50% of the time on gigs.
5.) I have 1 bass.
6.) I didn't have the 'Jaco Expierence' until 5 years in.
7.) I play and actually like Hartke Strings
8.) I still don't exactly know what a DI Box does.
9.) I've used the same instrument cable for 6 years..seriously. Practice, performance, recording, whatever..
10.) Did I mention, I can't stomach Rush for more than 23 seconds at a time.

I don't learn new material until the night before or the morning of rehearsal even though I have more than two weeks in which to do it.

I have a Star Trek communicator pin on my bass strap.

People think I play a 5-string because I used to play in a horn band and needed the Eb. I really play a 5-string because the strings are too far apart on a 4-string.

Here goes......

I'm 42 and been playing for only three months.
I can read music but dont..... im a tab junkie.
I should be getting lessons, but i'm having too damn much fun playing above mentioned tabs in the garage with my mp3 player.
I have two basses, neither is a Fender, one was free, the other one was less than $200 from MGR. The free one kicks ass and is my regular player.
One is a J and the free one is a J and Humbucker.
I dont use the neck pup on either.
My amp costs more then my basses combined.
My amp is an Acoustic B100 from GC and I freakin love it.
I have never gigged. I have never even played with someone else what wasnt my daughter who plays a Daisy Rock purple guitar (that she saved up a year for) and kicks @$$ on it. Hopefully that will change.
My free bass came with new DR hi beams on it. I changed my J to Hi Beams as well, and dont want to or will put anything else on 'em.
I wish I would have not wasted 20 years on having an unfulfilled dream of playing the bass, but at the same time, I think I appreciate it more now that I have the chance to play.
I smile everytime my wife has to come in the garage and tell me to turn it down cause I am rattling the chotchkies.
I get why people love Jaco, Wooten, etc, but dont want to play their stuff.
I believe there is nothing wrong with a simple bassline if it gets the butts shaking!
I do not play with a pick, nor will I ever.

Let those of you without sin cast the first stone........

These are more like "my musical circle" sins
- well, I enjoy playing with pick and I wish I could someday be like those pick groovers or like Paul McCartney.
- I love jazz but I know I'll never be able to play it
- I love P-bass with flats and pick
- Using an STV and an 8X10
- I like Pink Floyd.
- I don't like playing bossa nova bass lines (but i like latin music :D)
- I allways want to push the lows and not the mids.

I guess thats all.

- I desire the drums and sometimes have a lot more fun playing them rather than bass
- I've been pedal-GAS free for over a month
- I hate 51 P basses
- I hate Antigua finish & black w/ white pg (i like black w/ white pg on strats though..)
- Whenever I play w/ a pick I start playing guitar-like lines
- I hate god damn reggae music

- My desire to own a Rickenbacker bass turned into an unquenchable obsession.
- I frequently shout, "Feel the bass!"
- I air-bass guitar to my favorite songs.
- I only listen to the bass line with headphones that emphasize on bass.
- I like bass soloing done with taste.
- I like bass slides.
- I play all over the fretboard.
- I purposely make myself louder than my lead guitarist just to piss him off.
- I dislike slap bass because the lead guitarist ruined it for me. He would always horribly play the same RHCP riff on my bass whenever I'm not using it and show off right in front of me. In church choir practice, which is the only time he plays bass, he would also slap to simple church tunes. The choir coordinator dislikes it very much.
- I would never let my lead guitarist touch or play my bass.
- I play with both pick and fingers.
- I move around too much playing bass.
- I love making everything rumble.
- I like my bass tone to have a fuzzy, overdrive, and vintage vibe.
- I take pride in knowing that my girlfriend loves my bass playing. :bassist:
- I fit the bass player personality all too well; quiet, reserved, and cool.

Uuughhh...

-I think that 99% of boutique basses look hideous.
-I picked up bass solely because I thought it looked cool.
-I do not technically "own" my bass... It's on perma-loan from a friend until I have a the money to pay him for it.
-I do not know any complete songs... Only parts of songs. I've been playing for over half a year now.
- I play air-bass and air-guitar at shows.
- I've gotten yelled at by a music store owner for always trying out basses at his store and buying nothing. :hiding:
- I find myself disappointed in bassists who use picks... Despite using a pick half the time myself.
- I really like short scale basses, but won't play them as stupid matter of pride.

Edit: And I do a terrible Bootsy Collins impression.

I despise the rockstar, oh look at me I'm so cool guitarists.
Never have used a tuner, and tune my bass to my liking by discovering what sound i like from my open E string, and then using the 5th fret method to tune(which i read on a website).
Rarely practice sitting down, I'm always standing up playing, and letting the music take me to another real.
Used a pick a couple times, decided not to master that skill because i felt the pick slipping away, so just sticked to "fingering" my bass.
Barely started playing bass 2 months ago, and sometimes get mad of the fact that i'm rocking a 15 watt Peavey amp.
Don't have alot of friends that are into rock/metal music. 9 out of 10 are hip hop heads.
Don't have someone to correct any bad habits that i might be building up while playing bass.
