Bass Confessional

OOoooo boy am I in trouble

- I am mainly a thin stringer (read "guitard")
- I play 6 string basses (surprise!)
- I do play chordal stuff on the bass
- I do play two handed tapping bits on basses
- I do play slap bass techniques on my guitars (=/)
- I do NOT think that Fender is the be all end all of basses (or guitars for that matter)
- I think the argument that technique and feel are mutually exclusive is total B.S.
- I do think ALL music has something to offer and something you can learn from; how to, or how not to
- I do like smooth jazz (actual songs with melodies you can remember!) more than traditional jazz
- I think that jazz and funk players have just as much to learn from metal and rock players as metal and rock players have to learn from jazz and funk players.
- I do think metal music has more to offer than most people give it credit for in technique, groove (yes I said groove) and composition. Doubts? Check out Opeth or Evergray, just sayin'

...and for my final "sin" and nail in my souls perverbial bass coffin....

I think traditional jazz is held on a pedistal as the most elite form of music while in actuality it is the LEAST musical and memorable genre. Although I can appreciate the musicianship from a technical/theoretical viewpoint, it has to be the most self centered "look at me" form of music out there. It comes across to me as "1-2-3- everybody solo!" with little to no intention of creating a SONG.

There it is... my bass soul is going to hell!

My sins are many:
- I love to solo.
- I regularly play above the 5th, 7th, 12th and even 17th fret.
- I love effects on bass.
- I often hate chord changes, except for I-IV or I-V vamps.
- I'm not very good at slapping, but think it is very cool and am working on it.
- I want to chop the bottom half off of every piano in the world.

I love my Hondo to death but I use the headstock to close shutters on the nearby window when I don't feel like getting up.

In order to switch out the bridge on said Hondo, new holes needed to be drilled...so I just filled in the existing ones and eyeballed it. The bridge is probably not where it's supposed to be and is just baaaarely crooked. To compensate for this the action is super high and I could probably lower the E and G strings a bit and use a bow.

I dislike the sound of fresh strings, so I'll use the same pair of rounds as long as they'll stay intact. It's far enough away from the sound of flats to warrant not using them on my J-style bass, because I hated flats on it. When I have some extra money flats are going on the Hondo, though.

-I've used the warp feature of Ableton Live to fix timing issues when recording
-I own more guitars than basses
-Heck, I own more Stratocasters than basses
-I often read TB when I should be practicing
-I often read TB when I should be working
-I have vastly more equipment than talent
-I want more
-I listen to music with synthesized/sampled basslines (a healthy dose of Squarepusher helps even things out)
-I bought my son a guitar for Christmas

I'm still fairly new to playing bass, but I am learning and taking lessons (no way that is a sin)

Guess I may as well chime in:

I enjoy playing Mustang Sally! It may be a simple bass line, but it sure drives the song hard!

I am now getting into treble - just finished paying for an Ibby Artcore guitar... although so far I play it more like a bassist, not a guitarist!

Can't slap, pop only occasionally, love harmonics but can't play them very well at the moment.

Have two Fenders but the five-stringers get played far more often, as they're more physcially comfortable to play, as well as I like the tone from the Dinger and the Ibby better.

Don't use any effects (yet - *sigh,* give me time...)

Enjoy playing some of the better disco / funk tunes.

I play more with a pick.
I play chords.
I play taps and harmonics.
I play above the seventh fret regularly.
I prefer Manring, Squire, and Chancelor to Jaco, Jamerson, and Miller.
I don't care for Fender.
If it ain't got at least 24 frets I don't want it.
Oh, and I hate the sound of flats
.

I'm all of the ones in bold!

Also, I play fingerstyle 90% of the time but do use a pick on a couple of songs :D

I boost mids
Dude, that's not a sin, that's a virtue. The smiley-face eq is the sin - ask any soundman! :)

As long as I'm here:
1. I've never owned a Fender bass.
2. Under the covers at night, I secretly fancy myself a guitarist as well as a bassist.
3. Back in my prog-metal days, I bought a Warwick NT thumb 4. With a scallopped fretboard (Brian Barrett has it at the Low End now, I believe).
4. I scallopped my first bass (an Ibanez Roadstar II) with a carpet knife and some sandpaper.

1. I never leave home without my pick.
2. I swear I don´t understand half the bass lingo spoken here.
3. I´m weirded out every time I hear about a middle-aged man in a rock band.
4. I don´t know about over half of the things spoken on here.
