I plan on going to the UK to visit this year. Maybe my wife won’t get too mad if I visit Bass Direct!
You better go. And we will expect some videos! 
If you’re in London and there’s enough good will, also check out The Bass Gallery. Super cool little shop with a great selection.
If you go to Bass Direct a couple of miles down the road is Bass Bros. Appointment only, but they have some very nice basses.
If you go to the Bass Gallery, in Camden, about half a mile away is Guitar Guitar. More hobby than pro but a good shop all the same.

Give your wallet to your wife and get in that store while she’s having a cup of tea in a coffee shop on the other side of the street ! 
If you're in London, you really got to hit the whole Tin Pin Alley. It's such a different selection of basses than what we see stateside and a lot more independent shops that can curate better than your average big box store. Luckily, my partner's brother is also a musician (much better than me), so we always made a trip there when we visit her family in London and it's one the highlights of my trip.
Kind of appropriate for a bass store to be located in Warwick.

I bought a bass from them and shipped to the US. Very good experience.
Bass Gallery is a proper bass shop. The proprietor, Martin Petersen, also builds the lovely Sei Basses in the basement workshop.
The stock is fabulous. Some of the basses I have bought there from the used rack include Pino’s consigned backup 79 fretless stingray, ex Jeff Beck band 62 Jazz Bass and a super rare 70 factory fretless Jazz Bass. There is a 61 vvt Jazz Bass there currently which is as good as any I have played.
Set ups and modifications are first rate.
Another very good UK shop is Andy Baxter in Leeds. Always a great selection of high end basses, with a great vintage section.
I don’t bother with Denmark St (Tin Pan Alley) I’m sure there are some decent shops there but the prospect of buying counterfeit kit does not appeal.
Those vintage basses are way beyond anything I might buy. I honestly, I probably won’t pickup anything unless there was a great deal on an Anaconda. Any of the British stuff I might want is probably too expensive for me. Finally, I will
Probably buy a Metroline Sadowsky before I even go to the UK, and that will likely be my true retirement bass.

I don’t know about that. A guitarist, like Nile Rodgers, who truly loves playing rhythm, is fun too.
