Bass for Indie Music

That’s a classic Precision Bass tone. GHS Precision Flats for strings, or perhaps LaBella DTBs with a light foam mute.

To me it sounds like a bass with two pickups, slightly favoring the neck - Im not sure which twin pickup bass - it could be many - but it sounds like a Jazz to me (especially when he plays the octave 16th notes in spots, where it has that J-bass type articulation - listen at about 2:08 to hear these as an example - its a J-bass "snap" where standard P basses "burp" with octaves), with flats and/or tone rolled way back (if passive), and played with a pick - either slightly muted or with palm mute technique....It could be a standard P but Im wagering against it

Hey guys, I have finally decided to post on here after months of avid lurking. I am looking to get a new bass. I currently play a Schecter Stiletto Stage 4. It does me well for a decent range of music but I am really looking to get into more indie/punk music. I am willing to spend around 350$. I prefer 4 strings, light, and used. I was thinking of purchasing a MIM Fender Precision Bass but can't seem to find any for less than 450$. If you have any other basses you would recommend, let me know!

Your Schecter should be fine....Do a player/bass relationship reset: Change your strings, flatten your EQ and start dialing yourself back into it....unless you just want to buy a new bass of which most folks here are not going to talk you out of that (including me)

I have gotten replacements from Peavey for less than $25 shipped. That part isn't too hard to replace. I didn't look at the one in question but a mint condition USA Fury isn't too expensive when you find one.

A lot of basses with a P-style split pickup will sound like a P bass. Fender's are fine but you might also consider Ibanez, Yamaha, G&L, Peavey or even another Schecter. I'll also repeat what someone said earlier that there isn't much quality difference between a Mexican Fender and a mid-level Squier. I own a couple of each and they're very similar.

If you're set on Fender though, there should be plenty of used ones available. Reverb is legit but they tend to have higher prices than CL, ebay, or the TB classifieds. If you don't need it right away, sales on new models do pop up occasionally on sites like slickdeals.com. For example, Adorama had a big sale on MIM Fenders on Cyber Monday and they currently have good deals on open-box American Pro and Elite models.

I see MIM basses on CL pretty regular for $250~$400.

Also a Squier Vintage Modified or Classic Vibe Jazz would sound and look the part listening to that song, IMHO.

Definitely look for used.

I've got a kickass MIM Precision that was upgraded with a Seymour Duncan SPB 1 pickup and a blacked out pickguard for about 450.

Definitely a jazz bass, to my ears. Listen to the track around 0:25. Perhaps with flats or muted.

Sounds like a good price point for used Ps. Look around a little more. A P bass would do you good.

Any Squier, Fender, or Fender-like bass will get you close enough on tone.

Save up and keep watching Craigslist, Guitar Center's used site and TB's Bass classifieds. Be ready to jump when you spot a good deal, well beware on CL, but that's another story. I don't think you'll have as good of luck on Reverb since shipping is usually added to the price of the instrument and can add another $75.

If you put flats on it you could. Active EQ should be able to get really close depending on your amp. Also, Indie/Punk covers a lot of ground. It's a good thing you posted a sound sample.

That sounds to me more like a Jazz... two single coil pickups in parallel (or even a PJ, but more Jazz-like)

(laptop speakers are not great and it's kind of noisy here now... but that does not sound like a Precision to me... however, a Precision is a great bass to have in your collection )

Indie and P basses have a strong relationship.

Your posted song is pretty much the P bass sound in a band mix.

In your price range, you will find a MIM P Bass in just about any color you want.

Best part about a MIM P bass? They're easy to sell if it doesn't work for you.

There's a mess of chorus on the strat in the video but I think I might be hearing a hint of it on the bass as well?

Aha! So it's a Jaguar (PJ configuration) after all. I really can't hear the bass on that clip (my laptop speakers are great to remove all bass ) They're cool looking basses those. And not terribly expensive, good news for the OP. Alternatively a PJ would be a good call too.
