Bass Head Vs. Preamp+Power Amp?

From my perspective:

Dialling a little low end into my Eden WT500 at a small pub gig regularly brings up the clip lights , (8 ohm bridge configuration), and all the nastiness that infers. Now that I'm trialling a pre-poweramp combination, I don't have this problem any more.

New big head here would cost about $3,500. Poweramp with my existing SVP-IP preamp is about $1,100.

The tone is now what I want, all the time, any gig.

Cheers

Pre & Power amp is just the way to go... change your tone with different pres if you wish. My Eden Navigator & my Sansamp RBI with the same poweramp is night & day. If my poweramp blows... get a new one vs replacing the whole unit too. Use the poweramp to run some P.A. speakers for family functions as well. OR use 1/2 the amp to run your speakers & the other 1/2 to run a P.A. which is what I do for practice & its awesome.

Even though my intention is to always have at least one 'head' in the arsenal, I'm really sold on the pre/power amp concept. It gives me as much or more power than I will ever reasonably need, the versatility to power more than one cabinet and adjust volumes independantly, and the ability to change either pre or power section as needed down the road. This rig weighs 40.5 lbs including the Aguilar rack bag. The guys in my band love the tone and huge sound that come out of this setup. Depending on the gig and my mood, it powers either an Epifani UL-410, an Aguilar GS 212, or one or both of my DB 115's. Definitely not the lightest bunch of gear in the world, but the tones I hear make me smile every time I plug in to any of these combinations. :) In fact, I like the concept so much that I'm thinking of purchasing a Carvin DCM1500 down the road someday to pair with my Ashly SC-40 for the purpose of a backup rig. BTW, if you get tired of seeing pics of this rig, please let me know.
