Bass heavy groups/artists

MESHUGGAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty much all bass. The guitarists even try and make their guitars sound bass-like.

The sound of the bass live is monolithic.

+1
…like a band with two 8-string guitars played like basses in addition to a 5-string bass. I never got tired of their sound…

Otherwise:
SLUDGE: Electric Wizard, Weedeater, Toadliquor
HIP-HOP: Public Enemy, Digable Planets

I can't even hear the bass in Meshuggah. I wasn't even aware they had a bassist until I started posting here.

When you listen to Meshuggah what you are hearing is mostly bass. Try and find a video of the bass being played without the guitars, then you'll see! :bassist: They record the guitars to compliment the bass and not the other way around. Fredrik Thordendahl (guitarist) has said in interviews that Meshuggah would be totally lost without the bass.

I just did some listening. One some songs it's very loud, like on "Perpetual Black Second." On others, like "Bleed," I can't hear it at all.

I really can't believe there's only been one mention of Cream. Come on, it's CREAM, Jack Bruce was one of the first major lead bass players.

Rose Hill Drive-probably my favorite band of the last decade.
Blue Cheer (especially the first two albums)
Cake
The Firm (Can't really miss Tony Franklin's Fretless squawk.)
Deep Purple-I've always thought they had pretty distinct bass (Mk I&II)
Cheap Trick
Beck, Bogert, Appice
Cactus
James Gang
Spin Doctors
The Band of Gypsies
Sleep

Ofcourse: Zeppelin, The Who, and anything out of Motown with Jamerson.

Big +1 on Cake. The tone and groove on "I Will Survive" is sweet.
