Bass heavy groups/artists

-Cynic (on Focus, anyway)
-some of Blue Oyster Cult's stuff, surprisingly
-as I mentioned (i.e. ranted about) earlier- Skeletonbreath
-and though I am loathe to mention Aerosmith with $teven Tyler joining American idol and all... Their 70's stuff was pretty bass-heavy
-Queen

I hear a lot of bass in Dimmu Borgir. Death/Black metal occasionally has that "mixed out bass" connotation, but Dimmu Borgir really seems to put the bass in the foreground, although I really attribute that to ICS being a strong bassist who really puts the instrument out there.

I second RUSH, YES and THE POLICE.

Add to that the following groups in which the bass doesn't always dominate (therefore maybe not being "bass heavy") but which have very interesting bassists and bass sounds in general:

- Gentle Giant (first five albums)

- Genesis (especially from 1972 to 1980)

- Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians

- Simple Minds (early stuff, from 1980 to 1984, before they became overly commercial sounding)

- King Crimson

- Do Make Say Think (greatest post-rock or modern instrumental-rock band, sorry Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor - love you too, but DMST has a very jazzy/fusion adventurous feel to it, sort of like Tortoise but with much more emotion/energy)

Pop in the 80's was full of bass. That was why I became a bassist back then. Some examples here:
